The Arizona Diamondbacks walked into Truist Park on Friday night needing the kind of performance that can change the direction of a postseason race.

Brandon Pfaadt gave them exactly that.

Pfaadt delivered seven scoreless innings as the Diamondbacks defeated the Atlanta Braves 2-0 on August 14, 2026, giving Arizona an important road victory while continuing one of the most impressive pitching turnarounds of the Major League Baseball season.

Arizona improved to 65-58 with the victory while Atlanta fell to 73-49.

The Diamondbacks finished with 10 hits and committed no errors, while Atlanta managed only three hits against an Arizona pitching staff that completely controlled the game.

Pfaadt improved to 7-1, Chris Sale took the loss to fall to 12-8, and Brandyn Garcia earned his fourth save of the season.
But the box score only begins to explain what happened in Atlanta.

Atlanta never advanced a runner to second base against Arizona's pitching staff.

Think about that.

Nine innings against the Braves.

Three hits.

Zero runs.

Nobody reached second base.

That's domination.

Pfaadt also generated 13 swings and misses as Atlanta struggled to produce meaningful contact against him.

The performance extended Pfaadt's streak to 32 2/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

That's even more remarkable when you consider where his season stood just a couple of months ago.

Pfaadt had a 5.92 ERA through his first 13 appearances and was sent to Triple-A Reno in June. Instead of allowing the demotion to define his season, he returned to Arizona and completely changed the conversation.

Since returning to the Diamondbacks on June 30, Pfaadt is 7-0 with an ERA around 1.15 across nine starts. Arizona has gone 8-1 during those nine starts.

He has also now produced back-to-back outings of seven scoreless innings while surrendering only two hits.

The pitcher Arizona desperately needed for the stretch run may have arrived at exactly the right time.

Geraldo Perdomo Helps Arizona Strike First Against Chris Sale

Runs weren't going to come easily against Chris Sale.

The Diamondbacks knew that immediately.

Arizona attacked early.

Geraldo Perdomo helped ignite the offense in the first inning before Corbin Carroll lined a ball toward left field that Mauricio Dubón misplayed. The play was ruled a double and immediately put Arizona in position to score.

Gabriel Moreno followed with a ground ball to first base.

Perdomo was one of the biggest offensive contributors, finishing 4-for-5 with a double and scoring Arizona's first run.

Carroll finished 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.

Arizona repeatedly created opportunities but couldn't deliver the knockout hit against Atlanta's pitching staff.

That changed in the ninth.

A 1-0 lead feels very different from a 2-0 lead when you're three outs away from beating one of the National League's best teams.

Tim Tawa provided the insurance Arizona needed.

Facing Tyler Kinley in the ninth inning, Tawa launched a 406-foot solo home run to center field.

Pfaadt deserves the headlines, but Arizona's defense played an important role in preserving the shutout.

One of the biggest defensive moments came in the fourth inning when Matt Olson ripped a line drive at 100.1 mph.

Ryan Waldschmidt made a diving play to take away the hit.

Those are the plays that can disappear inside a final box score.

They shouldn't.

In a 2-0 game, preventing one baserunner can completely change an inning.

Arizona ended both streaks.

The Diamondbacks didn't overpower Atlanta offensively. They didn't need a five-run inning or a late comeback.

They won with starting pitching, defense, timely offense and a bullpen that refused to give Atlanta an opening.

That's a formula that travels extremely well in October.

Ketel Marte Injury Creates Concern for Diamondbacks

The victory did come with one significant concern.

Ketel Marte left the game because of soreness in his left knee.

Marte appeared to twist awkwardly while moving to field a Drake Baldwin ground ball during the first inning. He initially remained in the game but was removed in the second.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo revealed that Marte's knee had already been bothering him since Arizona's August 3-6 series against the San Diego Padres.

Marte was considered day-to-day following Friday night's game and was expected to be evaluated Saturday.

That's a situation Arizona will be watching closely.

Every game matters during a Wild Card chase, but keeping one of the most important players in the Diamondbacks lineup healthy matters even more.

Diamondbacks Wild Card Race Gets Another Boost

This wasn't just another win in August.

Arizona entered Atlanta fighting for its postseason life.

The Diamondbacks had recently slipped out of a National League Wild Card position despite playing competitive baseball, leaving very little room for extended losing streaks.

Friday's victory improved Arizona to 65-58.

More importantly, the Diamondbacks finished the night tied with Philadelphia while occupying the third National League Wild Card position.

There is still plenty of baseball remaining, but every series becomes increasingly important as September approaches.
