The Arizona Diamondbacks wasted absolutely no time taking control Sunday afternoon at Chase Field, rolling past the Colorado Rockies 9-1 to secure a series victory and continue building momentum in the NL West race. Behind a dominant outing from Ryne Nelson, explosive offense from Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte, and a memorable MLB moment from Tommy Troy, Arizona improved to 28-24 on the season while taking three of four games from Colorado.

Arizona’s offense came alive immediately in the bottom of the first inning. Ketel Marte opened the game with a double before Corbin Carroll ripped an RBI triple into right field to put the Diamondbacks on the board. Geraldo Perdomo followed with a sacrifice fly as Arizona quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks blew the game wide open in the second inning. Ryan Waldschmidt started the rally with a single and later stole second base before Aramis Garcia drove him home with an RBI single. Then came a milestone moment for Tommy Troy, who collected the first Major League hit of his career with a double to center field. Ketel Marte followed with a two-run ground-rule double, and Arizona never looked back.

Colorado’s afternoon became even tougher when starting pitcher Jose Quintana exited the game in the second inning due to left elbow discomfort.

Arizona continued to pile on in the third inning as Ryan Waldschmidt blasted the first triple of his MLB career, scoring Ildemaro Vargas and extending the lead to 7-0.

Meanwhile, Ryne Nelson delivered arguably the best performance of his season on the mound. Nelson kept Colorado’s lineup completely off balance throughout the afternoon, working deep into the game while allowing just one run. The outing marked the longest appearance of Nelson’s Major League career and gave Arizona’s bullpen much-needed rest heading into a difficult road trip.

The Diamondbacks added two more runs in the sixth inning thanks to more fireworks from Marte and Carroll. Ketel Marte delivered an RBI single before Carroll smashed another RBI triple into right-center field. The triple marked Carroll’s fifth career game with multiple triples and the 51st triple of his career, leaving him just three shy of tying Stephen Drew for the all-time Diamondbacks franchise record.

Carroll once again proved why he remains one of the most electrifying players in baseball. His combination of elite speed, power, and aggressive baserunning completely overwhelmed Colorado’s defense throughout the series finale.

Colorado finally broke through in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly from Chad Stevens, but by then the outcome had long been decided. Taylor Clarke closed out the ninth inning for Arizona as the Diamondbacks sealed the 9-1 victory.

​With the win, Arizona moved to 28-24 and now sits 4.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West standings. The Diamondbacks will now head out on the road for upcoming series against the San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners.
