Diamondbacks Ride Brandon Pfaadt's Strong Start to 5-3 Victory Over Cardinals

Saturday, July 18, 2026

The Arizona Diamondbacks responded exactly the way a playoff contender should on Saturday afternoon.

After dropping Friday night's opener, Arizona jumped on Cardinals starter Dustin May early, received another quality outing from Brandon Pfaadt, and held off a late St. Louis rally for a 5-3 victory before 38,244 fans at Chase Field. The win evened the three-game series at one game apiece and set up Sunday's rubber match between Eduardo Rodriguez and Andre Pallante.

With the roof closed and temperatures sitting comfortably at 76 degrees inside while Phoenix battled 93-degree weather and rain outside, the Diamondbacks delivered one of their more complete performances of the second half. They combined timely hitting, outstanding defense, efficient pitching, and clutch bullpen work to improve to 50-48 on the season while handing St. Louis its 46th loss.

Arizona wasted little time establishing momentum as Brandon Pfaadt looked sharp from his very first pitch. The right-hander retired the Cardinals in order in the opening inning, highlighted by a spectacular diving catch by Corbin Carroll in right field that robbed Ivan Herrera of extra bases. It was an early defensive play that energized the crowd and set the tone for the afternoon.

Neither offense managed much during the opening frame, but the Diamondbacks finally broke through in the second inning.

Gabriel Moreno started the rally with a single before Nolan Arenado followed with another base hit. After Max Kepler was retired and Tim Tawa struck out, veteran catcher James McCann delivered the first big hit of the afternoon. McCann lined an RBI single into right field, bringing home Moreno for the game's first run and giving Arizona a 1-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks blew the game open an inning later.

Ketel Marte started the third with another hit before Geraldo Perdomo worked a walk. Although Corbin Carroll grounded into a double play, Marte remained at third base and scored moments later on a Dustin May wild pitch to double Arizona's advantage.

Moreno immediately kept the pressure on with another single before Kepler drew a walk to load the bases for Nolan Arenado.

Facing his former organization, Arenado delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon.

The veteran third baseman ripped a two-run double into left field, scoring Moreno and Kepler to extend Arizona's lead to 4-0. It was a huge insurance hit that completely shifted momentum toward the home dugout while Chase Field erupted behind him.

Arizona added another run in the fourth inning.

Ryan Waldschmidt continued to impress by driving a double into center field before Ketel Marte came through once again. Marte lined an RBI single to center that easily scored Waldschmidt, pushing the Diamondbacks' lead to 5-0 and ending Dustin May's afternoon after five difficult innings.

Marte finished another outstanding performance by reaching base multiple times and once again serving as Arizona's offensive catalyst at the top of the lineup.

Meanwhile, Brandon Pfaadt continued to dominate.

The Arizona right-hander mixed his fastball effectively with quality secondary pitches while consistently getting ahead in the count. Through five scoreless innings, Pfaadt allowed very little hard contact and repeatedly stranded the few Cardinals who managed to reach base.

St. Louis finally mounted a threat in the sixth inning.

JJ Wetherholt opened with a single before Alec Burleson followed with another hit. Jordan Walker delivered an RBI single to put the Cardinals on the board before Lars Nootbaar loaded the bases with another base hit.

Manager Torey Lovullo quickly turned to Ryan Thompson in relief.

The veteran reliever limited the damage despite Masyn Winn producing an RBI groundout that made the score 5-2. Thompson escaped the inning by inducing another harmless pop-up, preserving Arizona's comfortable lead.

From there, the Diamondbacks bullpen took complete control.

Jonathan Loáisiga entered in the seventh before Brandyn Garcia recorded the final out after St. Louis threatened again with two runners aboard. Kevin Ginkel worked a clean eighth inning, striking out Lars Nootbaar while allowing only a walk. Paul Sewald handled closing duties in the ninth, recording his 23rd save despite surrendering a solo home run to Jimmy Crooks.

Crooks' third homer of the season briefly cut Arizona's lead to 5-3, but Sewald responded by striking out JJ Wetherholt before inducing a game-ending lineout from Ivan Herrera to secure the victory.

Pfaadt earned his fourth victory of the season and improved to 4-1, while Dustin May fell to 5-7 after allowing five earned runs. Sewald collected save number 23, continuing to anchor Arizona's bullpen during the playoff chase.
Several Diamondbacks turned in impressive offensive performances throughout the afternoon.

Ketel Marte reached base repeatedly while scoring twice and driving home another run. Gabriel Moreno collected multiple hits and scored twice, continuing his consistent production in the middle of the lineup. Nolan Arenado enjoyed perhaps his biggest offensive moment since joining Arizona by delivering the decisive two-run double against his longtime former club. James McCann added an RBI single, while Ryan Waldschmidt contributed a key double and eventually scored.

Defensively, Arizona was equally sharp.

Corbin Carroll's diving catch in the opening inning prevented extra bases and immediately established the aggressive defensive mindset Arizona maintained throughout the afternoon. The infield consistently converted routine outs, while the bullpen combined to protect the late lead despite St. Louis making one final push.

The victory not only evened the series but also gave Arizona valuable momentum heading into Sunday's deciding game.

The Diamondbacks will hand the baseball to Eduardo Rodriguez, who enters with an outstanding 8-3 record and sparkling 2.29 ERA. The Cardinals will counter with Andre Pallante, who is 10-6 with a 3.96 ERA.

With both clubs battling for postseason positioning, Sunday's finale suddenly carries even greater importance.
Arizona has already guaranteed itself an opportunity to win the series. Now the Diamondbacks will look to ride Saturday's momentum into another strong performance in front of the Chase Field faithful.

As the second half of the season continues, games like Saturday's may ultimately define whether Arizona returns to October baseball.
