TEMPE, Ariz. — With championship implications on the line and a jam-packed Mountain America Stadium roaring from the opening kick, the Arizona State Sun Devils entered Saturday night needing two things: a win over their bitter rival and a little help from BYU on Sunday to keep their Big 12 title hopes alive.

They only got half of that equation—just not the half they needed.

Behind a poised, efficient performance from quarterback Noah Fifita, a lockdown second-half defensive effort, and a grind-it-out fourth-quarter touchdown march, the No. 8 Arizona Wildcats pulled away from the No. 8 Arizona State Sun Devils, winning 23–7 and claiming the Territorial Cup for the second straight year.

FIRST QUARTER — MISSED OPPORTUNITIES DEFINE A SCORELESS START

Arizona won the coin toss and deferred, sending Arizona State’s offense out first. But the Sun Devils stumbled out of the gate with a quick three-and-out.

The Wildcats immediately pushed the tempo behind Noah Fifita’s no-huddle attack, mixing in short, controlled passes and inside runs. The drive appeared destined for points before Quincy Craig was stripped at the ASU 8-yard line by Jacob Rich Kongaika, with Javan Robinson falling on the loose ball.

ASU, however, couldn’t capitalize. Another empty drive gave Arizona good field position, but the Sun Devil defense stiffened again—this time forcing a 45-yard field goal attempt that sailed wide.

After fifteen minutes of physical, disciplined football, the scoreboard remained frozen at 0–0.

SECOND QUARTER — SUN DEVILS STRIKE FIRST, ARIZONA ANSWERS LATE

ASU looked to grab momentum early in the second quarter, but Jeff Sims floated an interception directly into the arms of Michael Dansby, setting the Wildcats up deep in Sun Devil territory. Once again, the ASU defense bailed out its offense, forcing yet another punt.

Then came the Sun Devils’ breakthrough.

Pinned at their own 10-yard line, ASU finally found rhythm. Raleek Brown ignited the drive with chunk runs, and Jeff Sims kept the march alive with key scrambles. On a beautifully executed read play, Sims kept the ball, bounced left, and sprinted 27 yards for the touchdown, giving ASU a 7–0 lead with 10:33 to go.

But Arizona wasn’t rattled.

Fifita calmly spread the ball around—particularly to Kris Hutson, who was a problem all night for ASU’s secondary. A sack derailed the Wildcats’ red-zone trip, and a 42-yard field goal attempt was blocked by ASU’s Keith Abney II.

Still, Arizona regrouped for one final push before the half. With :07 on the clock and no timeouts, the Wildcats scrambled to set up a kick after a booth review stopped the clock—and Michael Salgado-Medina drilled a 47-yarder.
At the half, the rivalry remained tight: ASU 7, Arizona 3.

THIRD QUARTER — MOMENTUM SWINGS AS ARIZONA TAKES CONTROL

Arizona opened the second half with the ball and immediately put ASU on its heels.

The Sun Devils were forced to punt from deep in their own territory after a monster 62-yard punt pinned them inside the 5. On the next play, disaster struck—Jeff Sims fumbled, and Arizona recovered at the ASU 6-yard line.

One play later, Fifita fired an 8-yard strike to Cameron Barmore, giving the Wildcats their first lead of the night, 10–7, with 11:36 left.

ASU’s offense sputtered, and Arizona’s field position advantage continued to stack up. The Wildcats added a 49-yard field goal from Salgado-Medina, extending the lead to 13–7 late in the third.

The turning point came moments later. On a deep shot attempt, Jeff Sims launched a ball toward midfield—but Treydan Stukes read it perfectly, intercepting the pass at the Arizona 6.

Arizona rode that momentum into the fourth quarter.

At the end of three: Arizona 13, Arizona State 7.

FOURTH QUARTER — WILDCATS CLOSE THE DOOR

With Arizona State’s offense running out of answers, the Wildcats leaned on consistency and composure. Arizona marched inside the ASU 15 before settling for another short field goal, extending the lead to 16–7.

ASU tried to respond. Jeff Sims orchestrated his best drive of the half, pushing the Sun Devils into the red zone. But on 1st-and-10 from the Arizona 16, Sims lost the ball again—Genesis Smith pounced on it, delivering what felt like the dagger with 8:11 remaining.

Arizona then delivered the knockout punch.

A 14-play, 87-yard drive—consuming 6:15 of clock and draining ASU’s hopes—ended with Kedrick Reescano powering into the end zone, pushing the lead to 23–7.

On ASU’s final possession, Jeff Sims threw his third interception of the night, this time to Dalton Johnson, sealing a frustrating finish for the Sun Devil offense.

The Wildcats took victory formation, silencing the Tempe crowd and securing the Territorial Cup.
