Houston has built its program around one of the best defensive systems in college basketball. The Cougars excel at slowing games down, forcing turnovers, and making opponents uncomfortable for forty minutes.

Another major factor working in Houston’s favor is location. If the Cougars reach the regional rounds, they will essentially be playing in front of a home crowd. That type of environment can make a huge difference in tight tournament games.

A potential Elite Eight matchup between Houston and Florida could be one of the best games of the entire tournament. Florida has the scoring punch, but Houston’s physical defense and rebounding advantage give them the edge.

West Region Breakdown: Arizona’s Path to the Final Four

The West Region is where my championship pick emerges.

The Arizona Wildcats enter the tournament playing some of the best basketball in the country. They dominated conference play, won their league tournament, and carry one of the strongest resumes in the field.

Arizona’s combination of athleticism, scoring balance, and defensive length makes them a nightmare matchup for almost anyone.

The Wildcats should advance comfortably through the first weekend, with their biggest early challenge potentially coming from Arkansas, a team capable of creating chaos with aggressive defense.

The bottom half of the region features a fascinating matchup between Purdue and Gonzaga, two teams with extensive tournament experience. Purdue’s size and efficiency give them the edge in that matchup.

However, Arizona has the versatility to neutralize Purdue’s strengths.

The Midwest Region could produce the biggest surprise of the tournament.

The team that stands out as slightly underseeded is Alabama.
