Corbin Carroll Crushes Two Homers but Diamondbacks Fall 7-6 in Extra-Inning Heartbreaker

Thursday, April 24, 2025

PHOENIX, AZ — April 23, 2025

A thrilling night under the open roof at Chase Field saw the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Rays trade punches in a dramatic back-and-forth game that extended into extra innings, ultimately ending with a 6-5 win for the Rays in 11.

Starting Pitchers:

Arizona: Eduardo Rodriguez (LHP, 1-2, 4.09 ERA)
Tampa Bay: Taj Bradley (RHP, 2-1, 5.24 ERA)
First Pitch Temperature: 87° on a clear desert evening.

🔥 Game Recap:
Arizona jumped out to an early lead thanks to a leadoff home run from Corbin Carroll, who absolutely demolished a pitch into the right-field bleachers. Tampa Bay responded in the top of the 2nd with back-to-back RBI hits from Jose Caballero and Christopher Morel, tying and then taking the lead.

The D-backs struck back with an RBI groundout from Jose Herrera in the bottom of the 2nd and a clutch double by Tim Tawa in the 4th, putting Arizona back up 3-2.

But the Rays didn’t go away. Yandy Diaz’s two-run single in the top of the 7th gave Tampa Bay a 4-3 lead, setting up more fireworks from Carroll, who launched his second homer of the night in the bottom of the inning to reclaim a 5-4 lead for Arizona.

Tampa Bay tied the game at 5-5 in the 8th, capitalizing on back-to-back hits by Morel and Simpson. The Rays had runners on but failed to cash in more, thanks to a huge strikeout from Ryan Thompson.

Extra innings brought high tension. After a scoreless 10th, Yandy Diaz delivered again in the 11th with an RBI double to right. Kameron Misner had earlier driven in a run, and though he was thrown out stretching for a triple, it still gave the Rays the edge.

In the bottom of the 11th, Alek Thomas hit a grounder that resulted in an error, allowing Suarez to score. But with the bases loaded and one out, Geraldo Perdomo grounded into a game-ending double play, sealing a hard-fought 7-6 win for Tampa Bay.

🧾 Final Box Score Highlights:
-Corbin Carroll: 2 HR (including leadoff blast), 3 RBIs, 2 BB
-Yandy Diaz: 3-for-6, 3 RBIs, go-ahead RBI in the 11th
-Tim Tawa: 1 double, 1 RBI, 2 BB
-Kameron Misner: 3-for-5, RBI double, scored twice
-WP: Pete Fairbanks (2-0)
-LP: Drey Jameson (0-1)
-SV: Eric Orze (1)
-Attendance: 16,100

Despite a two-home-run performance from Corbin Carroll that ignited the Chase Field crowd, the Arizona Diamondbacks couldn’t hold off the Tampa Bay Rays in a high-octane 11-inning battle. Yandy Diaz came up clutch once again in the 11th with an RBI double, and though Alek Thomas scored on an error in the bottom half to cut the deficit to one, Geraldo Perdomo grounded into a crushing double play to end the game, sealing the Rays' 7-6 victory in extra innings.

The two teams will be back at it in their rubber match on Thursday night, at Chase Field.
