Corey Day added another signature moment to his rapidly growing NASCAR résumé on Saturday afternoon, surviving the chaos of Dover Motor Speedway and making a dramatic late-race pass to win the BetRivers 200 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at the famed “Monster Mile” on May 16, 2026.

In a race filled with tire management, heavy lapped traffic, aggressive restarts, and multiple lead changes, Day tracked down veteran Justin Allgaier during the closing laps and completed the winning move with just four laps remaining. The victory marked Day’s second NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series win of the 2026 season and further cemented the Hendrick Motorsports prospect as one of the hottest young drivers in NASCAR.

Dover Motor Speedway once again delivered the kind of unpredictable short-track style racing that has made the one-mile concrete oval one of the toughest tracks on the NASCAR schedule.

Corey Day Delivers Under Pressure at Dover
For much of the afternoon, it appeared Justin Allgaier had the race under control. The JR Motorsports veteran used pit strategy, clean air, and patience in traffic to position himself at the front late in the event. Allgaier led 71 laps and looked poised to collect another victory at one of NASCAR’s most physically demanding tracks.

But Dover’s notorious traffic changed everything.

As the laps wound down, Allgaier encountered slower cars while navigating through heavy congestion around the concrete oval. Corey Day closed the gap quickly and used the high groove to build momentum entering Turn 3. With four laps remaining, Day powered around Allgaier on the outside and never looked back.

The move proved to be the race-winning pass.

The victory was another major statement for Day, who continues to prove he can compete against NASCAR veterans on some of the sport’s most challenging tracks. After already winning earlier this season at Talladega, Day now has victories on two completely different styles of racetracks, showcasing both versatility and maturity beyond his years.

Dover’s Monster Mile Creates Chaos Early
The BetRivers 200 started with immediate intensity as drivers fought for track position on Dover’s notoriously fast concrete surface. Brandon Jones quickly established himself as one of the cars to beat early in the race, leading 31 laps and capturing the Stage 1 victory.

The first major caution came on Lap 12 when Brent Crews made contact with Ryan Sieg and slammed into the outside wall. The incident stacked up traffic behind the wreck and collected multiple drivers, including Parker Retzlaff, Jeb Burton, and Lavar Scott.

The early accident immediately changed the complexion of the race and forced several contenders into recovery mode for the remainder of the afternoon.

Dover’s narrow racing grooves and difficult corner exits continued creating problems throughout the event as drivers struggled to maintain grip while dealing with worn tires and turbulent air in traffic.

Ross Chastain Dominates Middle Portion of the Race
While Brandon Jones controlled the early stages, Ross Chastain became the dominant force during the middle segment of the race. Chastain aggressively worked through traffic and controlled restarts while leading 68 laps overall.

The Trackhouse Racing driver earned the Stage 2 victory and appeared capable of battling for the overall race win before late-race contact altered the outcome.

One of the biggest moments of the race occurred when Taylor Gray and Ross Chastain battled aggressively for the lead during a restart sequence. Contact between the two drivers sent Gray crashing, triggering another caution and reshuffling the field once again.

Rajah Caruth was also involved in multiple incidents during the afternoon, including contact with Jesse Love while battling near the front of the field. The aggressive racing highlighted just how difficult Dover can become once rubber builds up on the concrete surface and drivers begin searching for grip in multiple lanes.

Justin Allgaier Falls Short After Dominant Performance
Despite leading the most important portion of the race late, Justin Allgaier was left frustrated after losing the lead in the closing laps.

Allgaier’s car had been one of the strongest throughout the final stage, especially during long green-flag runs where tire conservation became critical. However, heavy lapped traffic forced him to hesitate while working around slower cars near the end of the race.

That small delay was all Corey Day needed.

Even with the disappointing finish, Allgaier still walked away with a strong points day and reportedly extended his NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series championship lead over Sheldon Creed following the Dover race weekend.

As the 2026 NASCAR season continues, Allgaier remains one of the favorites to compete for the championship thanks to his consistency, veteran experience, and ability to run near the front nearly every week.

Dover Motor Speedway Continues to Deliver Drama
Dover Motor Speedway once again proved why it remains one of the most unique tracks in NASCAR.
