The Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals traded blows early and often in a high-scoring affair at Chase Field, but a six-run outburst by the Nationals in the 3rd and 6th innings proved too much for Arizona to overcome in front of a packed house celebrating Women’s Night.
Top of 1st:
The Nationals struck first after capitalizing on a costly error by Arizona’s second baseman, leading to two unearned runs on a 2-RBI single from Robert Hassell III.
Bottom of 1st:
Arizona answered immediately with a flurry of offense. Doubles by Carroll and Smith, plus RBIs from Perdomo, Naylor, Suarez, and Smith, gave the D-backs a 4-2 lead.
Top of 3rd:
Washington regained momentum. A solo shot by James Wood followed by a three-run homer by Josh Bell turned the tide, pushing the Nats ahead 6-4.
Bottom of 3rd:
Arizona refused to back down, as Pavin Smith’s RBI double tied the game at 6-6. Gabriel Moreno nearly gave the D-backs the lead, but a home-run robbery by Daylen Lile ended the inning.
Top of 6th:
The Nationals reclaimed the lead on a clutch 2-RBI single from Nathaniel Lowe, making it 8-6.
Top of 7th:
Another RBI from Hassell III extended the lead to 9-6.
Bottom of 9th:
Corbin Carroll was hit by a pitch and stole second, eventually scoring on a Perdomo groundout, but the rally ended with Josh Naylor’s flyout.
