PHOENIX — For six innings Monday night, it looked like the Arizona Diamondbacks were on the verge of another comeback victory.

Ketel Marte energized Chase Field with a game-tying two-run home run, rookie Mitch Bratt battled through adversity in just his second major league start, and Nolan Arenado delivered one of the most memorable moments of the 2026 season by recording the 2,000th hit of his remarkable career.

Unfortunately for Arizona, one difficult inning erased all of that momentum.

The Athletics broke open a tie game with a three-run seventh inning and never looked back, defeating the Diamondbacks 5-2 before a crowd of 19,121 at Chase Field. The loss dropped Arizona to 51-48 on the season and served as another frustrating reminder that every game carries added significance as the National League Wild Card race continues to tighten.

The evening began as a pitcher's duel between Athletics left-hander Jeffrey Springs and Diamondbacks rookie Mitch Bratt. Arizona had several early opportunities to generate offense but repeatedly came up empty against Springs, while Bratt settled into the game after a scoreless opening inning.

The Athletics struck first in the second inning when Joshua Kuroda-Grauer launched the first home run of his Major League career over the left-field wall to give Oakland an early 1-0 advantage. Bratt didn't allow the moment to snowball, however, continuing to attack hitters and keeping the Diamondbacks within striking distance.

His biggest test came in the third inning when the Athletics loaded the bases with one out after back-to-back singles from Jacob Wilson and Tyler Soderstrom, followed by a hit batter. Bratt responded like a veteran, striking out Colby Thomas before getting Jonah Heim to fly out to right field, escaping the inning without allowing another run. It was the kind of sequence that showed why Arizona remains excited about the young left-hander's future.

Wilson added to Oakland's lead in the fifth inning when he drove a solo home run into the left-field seats, extending the Athletics' advantage to 2-0. Bratt exited later in the inning after allowing two earned runs over 4.2 innings while scattering eight hits, walking one, and striking out three. Although the stat line wasn't dominant, he once again kept the Diamondbacks in position to compete.

The most unforgettable moment of the night came moments later in the bottom of the fifth.

With one out, Nolan Arenado lined a double into left field for the 2,000th hit of his Hall of Fame career. Chase Field immediately erupted as play stopped, allowing the veteran third baseman to soak in a lengthy standing ovation from the home crowd. Arenado became just the 297th player in Major League Baseball history to reach the prestigious milestone, adding another incredible accomplishment to one of the game's most decorated careers.

Arizona was unable to capitalize on the historic moment offensively, leaving Arenado stranded at second base and heading into the sixth inning still trailing by two runs.

That changed quickly.

Jorge Barrosa opened the inning with a double, bringing Ketel Marte to the plate with an opportunity to shift the momentum. Marte delivered in a big way, turning on a pitch and sending it just inside the left-field foul pole for a game-tying two-run home run. His 18th homer of the season instantly brought life back into Chase Field and erased Oakland's lead.

The Diamondbacks appeared poised to do even more damage when Geraldo Perdomo followed with a perfectly placed bunt single. Perdomo later stole second base for his 16th stolen base of the season and advanced to third on a throwing error by Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers, giving Arizona a golden opportunity to take its first lead of the night. Instead, Athletics reliever Luis Medina regrouped, striking out Tim Tawa and Gabriel Moreno before retiring Ildemaro Vargas on a fly ball to center field, ending the threat.

That missed opportunity became the turning point of the game.

Kevin Ginkel took over for Arizona in the seventh inning and immediately found himself in trouble after consecutive singles by Shea Langeliers and Lawrence Butler. Following a failed bunt attempt that produced the inning's first out, Tommy White beat out an infield single to load the bases. Pinch hitter Jeff McNeil then delivered the biggest hit of the night, lining a two-run single into center field to restore Oakland's lead. Moments later, a wild pitch allowed Tommy White to score from third, stretching the Athletics' advantage to 5-2 before Arizona finally escaped the inning.
The Diamondbacks never recovered.

Arizona managed only three baserunners over the final three innings and never mounted another serious threat. Ryan Waldschmidt represented the tying run in the ninth inning after Gabriel Moreno singled and Tyler Locklear walked, but Athletics closer Hogan Harris froze the rookie with a called third strike to end the game and secure his seventh save of the season.

Despite the loss, several Diamondbacks continued to produce quality performances. Ketel Marte once again proved why he remains one of Arizona's most dangerous hitters, accounting for both Diamondbacks runs with his sixth-inning blast. Geraldo Perdomo reached base twice, stole another base, and continued to pressure opposing defenses with his speed. Jorge Barrosa collected a double and scored Arizona's first run, while Gabriel Moreno and Ildemaro Vargas each added two-hit performances. Arenado's historic double became the emotional highlight of the evening and a moment that will be remembered long after the final score is forgotten.

For the Athletics, Jacob Wilson finished with three hits, including his sixth home run of the season, while Tommy White added three hits of his own. Jeff McNeil's pinch-hit, two-run single completely changed the complexion of the game, and Oakland's bullpen combined to shut down Arizona after Marte's home run, allowing just a handful of baserunners over the final four innings.

The Diamondbacks now find themselves at 51-48, and while there is still plenty of baseball remaining, every missed opportunity feels increasingly important in an ultra-competitive National League playoff race. Monday night's loss wasn't defined by one mistake or one swing. Instead, it was a reminder that games can quickly shift on a single inning, especially against teams eager to play spoiler.

Arizona will have an opportunity to bounce back Tuesday night when the Athletics and Diamondbacks continue their series at Chase Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. as the Diamondbacks look to even the series and regain momentum before the stretch run of the regular season.

One thing is certain after Monday night's game. Nolan Arenado gave Diamondbacks fans a historic memory they'll never forget. Unfortunately, the final score prevented it from becoming a night of celebration.
