The Arizona Diamondbacks had every opportunity to leave Chase Field on Sunday afternoon with a series victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Instead, they left with frustration.

After carrying a two-run lead into the seventh inning and receiving an impressive Major League debut from rookie pitcher Jose Cabrera, the Diamondbacks watched Minnesota rally late for a 4-2 victory on June 21, 2026. The loss dropped Arizona to 39-38 on the season and allowed the Twins to take two of three games in the weekend series.

For six innings, the game looked like exactly the type of response Arizona needed after surrendering 16 runs in Saturday night's loss. Strong pitching, timely hitting, clean defense, and a controlled pace had the Diamondbacks positioned to secure the series.

Ketel Marte Delivers Early
Arizona's offense struck first in the second inning.

With runners on base and two outs, Ketel Marte came through with a clutch two-run double, driving home both Diamondbacks runs and giving the home crowd plenty to cheer about.

Jose Cabrera Announces His Arrival
While Marte delivered the offense, the story of the afternoon was rookie starter Jose Cabrera.

Making his Major League debut, Cabrera looked anything but overwhelmed.
The young right-hander attacked hitters, worked efficiently, and showed composure beyond his years while holding Minnesota scoreless through five innings.

Considering the Diamondbacks pitching staff had just endured one of its roughest performances of the season less than 24 hours earlier, Cabrera's outing could not have come at a better time.

His fastball had life, his command remained steady, and he consistently put Twins hitters on the defensive. Every inning he completed increased optimism throughout Chase Field that Arizona might have discovered another valuable arm for its rotation.

Even in defeat, Cabrera's debut may ultimately become the biggest takeaway from the game.

The Diamondbacks have battled injuries and inconsistency throughout portions of the season. If Cabrera can continue performing at this level, Arizona may have found an important contributor for the second half of the year.

Twins Finally Break Through
Minnesota spent six innings searching for answers.

In the seventh inning, they found them.

The Twins loaded the bases and began applying pressure to Arizona's bullpen.
Josh Bell delivered the first blow with an RBI single that cut the Diamondbacks lead to 2-1.

Moments later, Alex Jackson tied the game with another RBI single.

Then came the play that changed the afternoon.

A Diamondbacks defensive miscue allowed the go-ahead run to score, completing a three-run inning for Minnesota and turning a comfortable Arizona lead into a 3-2 deficit.

Minnesota added breathing room in the ninth inning when Trevor Larnach delivered an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-2.

The insurance run proved valuable.

Arizona could not mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth as the Twins closed out the victory and secured the series win.

Diamondbacks Offense Goes Quiet
One of the recurring themes throughout the season has been Arizona's inability to consistently capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Sunday provided another example.

The Diamondbacks finished with just six hits and failed to score after the second inning.

Outside of Marte's two-run double, Arizona struggled to put sustained pressure on Minnesota pitching.

Corbin Carroll, Geraldo Perdomo, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., and the rest of the lineup were unable to deliver the late-game rally fans were hoping for.

For a team chasing playoff positioning in a competitive National League race, finding more consistency at the plate remains a priority.
