The Arizona Diamondbacks delivered one of their most complete performances of the 2026 MLB season on May 18th, overpowering the San Francisco Giants 12-2 at Chase Field in Phoenix. Arizona’s offense erupted early, Zac Gallen returned to form on the mound, and the Diamondbacks overwhelmed San Francisco in every phase of the game to even their record at 23-23.

For a team searching for consistency throughout the first two months of the season, Monday night felt like the kind of statement victory capable of shifting momentum inside the National League West.

The Diamondbacks wasted no time putting pressure on former Arizona pitcher Robbie Ray. After a quick start from Zac Gallen in the top of the first inning, Arizona’s lineup exploded in the bottom half with a massive four-run inning that immediately energized the crowd at Chase Field.

The defining moment came when Nolan Arenado crushed a grand slam deep into the Arizona night, giving the Diamondbacks a commanding early advantage and sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The slam highlighted an aggressive offensive approach that the Giants never managed to recover from.

Arizona continued applying pressure inning after inning. The Diamondbacks added another run in the second inning before extending the lead again in the third. By the fifth inning, the game had completely unraveled for San Francisco as Arizona posted five more runs to turn the matchup into a blowout.

The Diamondbacks finished with 12 runs on 16 hits, tying their season high in hits while showcasing one of the deepest offensive performances of the year. Every starter in Arizona’s lineup contributed offensively, keeping constant pressure on the Giants’ pitching staff and defense.

Ryan Waldschmidt continued his strong offensive stretch with a three-hit performance, while Gabriel Moreno added a two-run home run that further buried San Francisco. Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll, Geraldo Perdomo, and Ildemaro Vargas all played major roles in the offensive attack as Arizona consistently found traffic on the bases throughout the game.

While the offense stole the headlines, Zac Gallen quietly delivered one of his strongest starts in recent weeks. The Diamondbacks ace worked six solid innings, allowing just two runs while striking out five batters. More importantly, Gallen looked far more comfortable attacking hitters and commanding the strike zone after battling inconsistency earlier in the season.

Arizona’s bullpen handled the rest without issue. Ryan Thompson, Bryan Garcia, and Jonathan Loáisiga combined for three scoreless innings to close out the victory and preserve valuable bullpen arms moving forward in the series.

For the Giants, the night quickly turned into a disaster. Robbie Ray struggled from the opening inning and never found a rhythm against Arizona’s aggressive lineup. The veteran left-hander allowed 10 runs, nine earned, across 4.2 innings in one of the roughest outings of his 2026 campaign.

San Francisco’s offense never generated sustained momentum against Gallen or Arizona’s bullpen. Willy Adames provided one of the few bright spots for the Giants with a home run, but the Diamondbacks controlled the game from the opening inning through the final out.

Defensively, San Francisco’s struggles only added to the frustration as the Giants committed three errors during the loss. Arizona, meanwhile, played a clean game defensively and capitalized on nearly every opportunity offensively.

The victory represented Arizona’s largest win margin since the 2023 season and gave the Diamondbacks a much-needed confidence boost during an important stretch of divisional baseball. After several uneven performances earlier in May, the Diamondbacks finally showed the explosive offensive ceiling many expected entering the season.

​If Arizona can continue receiving strong starts from Zac Gallen while maintaining this level of offensive production, the Diamondbacks could quickly become one of the more dangerous teams in the National League playoff race heading into summer.
