A Nightmare First Inning Dooms Arizona
Some losses build slowly. Others hit all at once.

Sunday afternoon at Chase Field was the latter, as the Arizona Diamondbacks fell 10-4 to the Toronto Blue Jays in a game that was effectively decided before most fans were even settled in their seats. Toronto exploded for eight runs in the top of the first inning, putting Arizona in an immediate and overwhelming hole.

Despite the lopsided loss, the Diamondbacks still secured the series win 2-1, but this finale exposed just how quickly things can spiral when starting pitching falters early.

The First Inning Collapse
Ryne Nelson took the mound looking to continue Arizona’s strong run, but instead ran into a relentless Blue Jays lineup that didn’t miss.

The inning started with traffic on the bases and quickly turned into an avalanche. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. delivered the first big blow with a two-run single, and from there Toronto kept piling on. Eloy Jiménez followed with an RBI hit, Kazuma Okamoto drove in two more with a double, and Nathan Lukes capped the inning with a three-run double that made it 8-0.

There were no defensive miscues or bad luck plays—just hard contact and timely hitting across the board. Nelson recorded only one out before being pulled, finishing with eight earned runs allowed in one of the toughest outings of his season.

Playing From Behind All Day
Down eight runs before they even came to bat, the Diamondbacks were forced into catch-up mode immediately. They showed some life in the second inning when James McCann drove in Adrian Del Castillo to get Arizona on the board, but any momentum was short-lived.

Toronto responded quickly. Okamoto added to his big day with a solo home run in the third, and Andrés Giménez brought in another run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. By the time the game reached the middle innings, the Blue Jays had built a 10-1 lead and were firmly in control.

Arizona’s Offense Shows Some Fight
To their credit, the Diamondbacks didn’t completely disappear offensively. They managed to collect 10 hits on the day and continued to apply some pressure late in the game.

Adrian Del Castillo put together a strong performance, reaching base multiple times and driving in a run with a double. Jorge Barrosa provided the biggest swing for Arizona with a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Several others in the lineup contributed with base hits, showing that the offense is still capable of producing.

However, the difference came in execution. Arizona struggled in key moments, going just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and grounding into two double plays. Those missed opportunities prevented any chance of turning the game into something more competitive.

Pitching Settles In After Early Damage
While the first inning told the story, the pitching staff deserves some credit for what happened afterward.
Once Nelson exited, Arizona’s bullpen stabilized the game. Grant Hoffmann bridged the gap with a solid outing, and Brandon Pfaadt provided much-needed length, working deep into the game and limiting further damage.

In fact, after the eight-run first inning, Diamondbacks pitchers allowed just two runs over the final 8.2 innings. It’s a frustrating reality for Arizona—outside of that opening frame, this was a very manageable game.

Blue Jays Take Full Advantage
Toronto’s lineup came out aggressive and executed nearly flawlessly early on. Nathan Lukes, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Kazuma Okamoto led the charge, combining for multiple hits and driving in the bulk of the runs.

The Blue Jays finished with 14 hits and consistently capitalized on their opportunities, going 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Their ability to deliver early and often is what made the difference.

On the mound, Kevin Gausman took full advantage of the run support. He kept Arizona from building any sustained momentum, working efficiently through six innings and allowing just two runs. With such a large early lead, his job was simply to stay in control—and he did exactly that.

Final Take
This game comes down to one thing: the first inning.
The Diamondbacks didn’t get outplayed for nine innings—they got buried in one. After that, they showed enough on both sides of the ball to suggest this could have been a competitive game under normal circumstances.

The positive is that Arizona still won the series and continues to show signs of a strong early-season team. The concern is that outings like this from the rotation can erase momentum in a hurry.

The focus now is simple—reset, tighten up the starting pitching, and move forward.

​Arizona will look to bounce back in their next series against the Chicago White Sox and keep building on what has been a solid start to the season. If they can get consistency from their starters, this is still a team trending in the right direction.
