Diamondbacks Drop Second Straight in Extras as Rays Take the Series

Friday, April 25, 2025

PHOENIX — For the second night in a row, it was heartbreak at Chase Field. The Arizona Diamondbacks fell 7-4 to the Tampa Bay Rays in extra innings on Wednesday night, marking another frustrating chapter in their early season narrative. Once again, late-game bullpen struggles and missed offensive opportunities sealed their fate in a game that had plenty of early promise.

⚾ Game Recap
Corbin Burnes took the mound for Arizona in the rubber match against Tampa Bay’s Drew Rasmussen, with Chase Field welcoming 20,661 fans under an open roof and a comfortable 85-degree sky.

Arizona struck first with Corbin Carroll’s leadoff single and some heads-up base running, eventually scoring on Josh Naylor’s RBI single. Alek Thomas and Carroll added RBIs in the second, putting the D-backs up 3-0. A solo homer from Tim Tawa in the fifth pushed the lead to 4-1.

But the Rays chipped away—capitalizing on an error by Burnes, and later tying it in the ninth inning with a clutch RBI single from Yandy Díaz. With the game tied 4-4, fans were treated to extra innings drama once again.

In the 10th, Junior Caminero’s RBI ground rule double and a crushing two-run homer by Christopher Morel gave the Rays a 7-4 lead. Arizona’s offense had no answer in the bottom half, going quietly to seal their second straight loss in extras.

🔥 Key Moments:

  • Carroll scores early, collects fifth steal of the year
  • Tim Tawa’s fourth big-league homer gives fans a jolt
  • Rays score three in the 10th, including Morel’s bomb
  • Geraldo Perdomo ends both losses with game-ending outs
  • Arizona bullpen allows multiple extra-inning runs for the second straight night

📊 Final Box Score:

Tampa Bay Rays 7
Arizona Diamondbacks 4
W: Edwin Uceta | L: J.P. Feyereisen | SV: Pete Fairbanks

🧊 Ice Cold Bullpen, Hot Seat?
Arizona’s bullpen has now allowed 6 earned runs in the last two extra innings across back-to-back games. Perdomo's back-to-back chances to be the hero ended in disappointment. And despite early offensive sparks, the D-backs couldn’t close the deal.

They’ve now lost 4 of their last 6 games and dropped their second straight series. The road doesn’t get any easier…
