The Arizona Diamondbacks looked poised to carry Monday night's momentum into another victory Tuesday evening at Petco Park. Instead, one difficult inning completely changed the game.

After jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, the Diamondbacks watched the San Diego Padres respond immediately with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, sending Arizona to a frustrating 4-1 loss on July 7. The defeat dropped the Diamondbacks to 45-46 on the season, while the Padres climbed back to .500 at 45-46 as well, making the National League Wild Card race even tighter entering the second half of the season.

Arizona wasted another opportunity to move above the .500 mark after dominating San Diego 8-0 the previous night. Instead, Tuesday served as another reminder that consistency remains one of the biggest obstacles facing Torey Lovullo's club.

The Diamondbacks couldn't have scripted a better start. Corbin Carroll ignited the offense in the top of the first inning, reaching base and eventually crossing home plate to give Arizona an early 1-0 advantage. After scoring eight runs on Monday, it appeared the Diamondbacks' offense was ready for another productive night against a Padres team that had struggled to generate momentum in recent weeks.

That optimism disappeared almost instantly.

Zac Gallen, looking to put together another quality outing, never found his rhythm in the opening frame. San Diego put traffic on the bases before Jake Cronenworth delivered the biggest swing of the game, launching a three-run home run that electrified Petco Park. By the time the inning ended, the Padres had turned a one-run deficit into a commanding 4-1 lead.

Remarkably, those would be the final runs scored by either team.

To Gallen's credit, he regrouped after the disastrous first inning. The veteran right-hander settled into the game, keeping San Diego off the scoreboard for the remainder of his outing and giving Arizona every opportunity to climb back into the contest. Unfortunately for the Diamondbacks, the offense never answered the challenge.

The Padres received an excellent performance from veteran starter Germán Márquez, who limited Arizona's lineup throughout the evening. Márquez scattered just three hits across five innings while striking out four Diamondbacks hitters. Whenever Arizona appeared ready to mount a rally, Márquez executed quality pitches to escape trouble before handing the ball to one of baseball's more dependable bullpens.

San Diego's relievers took over from there, shutting the door over the final four innings and preventing Arizona from generating any late-game drama.

The Diamondbacks finished with just five hits, a stark contrast from Monday night's offensive explosion. Gabriel Moreno continued his strong play by collecting two of Arizona's five hits, while Corbin Carroll scored the club's only run after reaching base in the opening inning. Outside of those contributions, the Diamondbacks struggled to string together quality at-bats, producing little hard contact against Padres pitching.

San Diego wasn't exactly an offensive powerhouse either, finishing with only six hits. The difference was simple: the Padres capitalized on their opportunity in the first inning, while Arizona never found the timely hit needed to erase the deficit. Cronenworth's three-run homer accounted for three of San Diego's four runs and ultimately proved to be the decisive moment of the game.

For Arizona, the loss continues a frustrating trend that has surfaced throughout much of the 2026 season. When the Diamondbacks receive solid pitching, the offense occasionally goes quiet. When the offense produces early, one difficult inning on the mound has sometimes erased that advantage. Tuesday's game was another example of a team still searching for the consistency needed to climb the National League standings.

Despite the defeat, there were positives to build upon. Gallen's ability to settle down after the opening inning prevented the game from becoming a blowout, while the bullpen once again gave Arizona quality innings to keep the deficit manageable. The problem was simply an offense that couldn't solve San Diego's pitching staff after the first inning.

Now the focus shifts to the rubber match of the series, where the Diamondbacks will once again try to regain momentum before the All-Star break. Every game carries increased importance as the National League Wild Card race remains crowded, and Arizona can ill afford to let opportunities slip away against a division rival sitting right beside them in the standings.

​For a club with postseason aspirations, bouncing back quickly will be essential.
