The Arizona Diamondbacks had all the momentum.

They had battled back after falling behind early. They had energized a sold-out Chase Field crowd with a dramatic late-inning comeback. They had one of their biggest stars deliver in one of the biggest moments of the season.

Then, just as quickly as the momentum arrived, it disappeared.

The St. Louis Cardinals answered Arizona's eighth-inning rally with a go-ahead run in the top of the ninth before escaping one final Diamondbacks threat to secure a heartbreaking 5-4 victory Friday night in the opener of a pivotal three-game National League Wild Card series.

The loss drops Arizona to 49-48 on the season and immediately puts even more pressure on the remainder of the weekend. Entering the second half separated by just a game and a half in the Wild Card race, every matchup between the Diamondbacks and Cardinals carries playoff implications. Instead of gaining ground, Arizona watched St. Louis strengthen its position while handing the Diamondbacks another frustrating defeat in a season that has been filled with missed opportunities.

Things unraveled quickly for Arizona in the opening inning.

Merrill Kelly barely had time to settle into the game before the Cardinals jumped on him. St. Louis capitalized on early traffic, with Masyn Winn delivering the biggest blow of the inning by driving home two runs with a clutch single. Before many fans had settled into their seats, Arizona found itself staring at a 3-0 deficit.

To their credit, the Diamondbacks refused to panic.

Kelly regrouped after the rocky first inning and gave Arizona an opportunity to climb back into the game. While he wasn't at his sharpest, he kept the Cardinals from delivering the knockout punch, allowing the offense time to chip away against Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy.

Arizona's offense slowly found its rhythm.

The Diamondbacks manufactured scoring opportunities throughout the middle innings but repeatedly struggled to deliver the timely hit that could completely erase the deficit. Several promising rallies fizzled before Arizona finally broke through late in the contest.

That breakthrough came courtesy of the player who has consistently delivered in the biggest moments all season.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and Arizona trailing by two runs, Corbin Carroll stepped into the batter's box with Chase Field holding its breath.

Moments later, the stadium erupted.

Carroll launched a towering two-run home run into the Arizona night, instantly tying the game at 4-4 and giving the Diamondbacks exactly the emotional lift they needed. It was another signature moment in Carroll's All-Star caliber campaign and appeared to completely shift momentum toward Arizona entering the final inning.

For a few minutes, it felt like the Diamondbacks had stolen control of the game.

Unfortunately for Arizona, the Cardinals never blinked.

In the top of the ninth inning, St. Louis immediately responded by putting pressure on the Diamondbacks bullpen. After moving runners into scoring position, Iván Herrera delivered the decisive blow with a sacrifice fly that plated the go-ahead run and restored the Cardinals' lead at 5-4.

Instead of celebrating an incredible comeback, Arizona suddenly found itself needing another rally.

The Diamondbacks nearly found one.

Facing Cardinals closer Riley O'Brien, Arizona mounted one final threat in the bottom of the ninth inning. The tying run reached base and Chase Field once again came alive believing another comeback was brewing. But a perfectly executed defensive sequence by St. Louis—including a critical pickoff that erased a baserunner—dramatically changed the inning and allowed O'Brien to finish off his 25th save of the season.

When the final out settled into a Cardinals glove, the Diamondbacks were left wondering what might have been.

Offensively, Arizona showed flashes of resilience.

Carroll's game-tying homer highlighted the evening, while the Diamondbacks collected eight hits overall. However, the inability to consistently produce with runners in scoring position proved costly. Arizona stranded multiple opportunities throughout the night and finished with eight strikeouts, preventing the offense from fully capitalizing on several innings where additional runs were within reach.

For St. Louis, Masyn Winn was the offensive catalyst from the very beginning. His three-RBI performance, including the pivotal first-inning two-run single, gave the Cardinals an early cushion they would protect throughout the evening. JJ Wetherholt added a solo home run, while Iván Herrera's sacrifice fly ultimately became the game-winning RBI.
Michael McGreevy deserves significant credit as well. Although Arizona frequently threatened against him, the Cardinals starter consistently made quality pitches in high-leverage situations, limiting damage and allowing St. Louis to maintain its advantage until the late innings.

The biggest storyline, however, remains Arizona's inability to finish games against direct postseason competition.
The Diamondbacks had every opportunity to begin the second half with a statement victory. Instead, they surrendered the lead moments after their biggest offensive swing of the night and watched another important game slip away.

With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, every game against fellow Wild Card contenders carries additional weight. Arizona remains firmly in the playoff hunt, but losses like Friday night's become increasingly difficult to overcome in a crowded National League race.

Now the focus shifts to Saturday.

Brandon Pfaadt is expected to take the mound looking to even the series against Dustin May and prevent the Cardinals from gaining even more separation in the Wild Card standings. For the Diamondbacks, the formula is simple.

Win the series.

​Because if Arizona hopes to be playing meaningful baseball in October, games against teams they're chasing in the standings can't continue ending like this one.
