On Native American Recognition Day at Chase Field, the Arizona Diamondbacks came out swinging and didn’t look back, riding a dominant first inning and strong pitching to a 3-1 win over the Washington Nationals in front of 29,664 fans.

Early Fireworks Spark Arizona Offense
After Corbin Burnes struck out the side in the top of the first, Arizona quickly capitalized. Ketel Marte singled to lead things off, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove him home with a double to right. Moments later, Eugenio Suarez crushed a two-run homer to straightaway center, giving the D-backs an early 3-0 lead that would stand the test of time.

Burnes Shines Before Exit
Burnes was electric early, striking out five in just over four innings before leaving the game due to what appeared to be arm discomfort. Jaylen Beeks stepped in during the 5th inning, and although he gave up a run-scoring single to James Wood, the bullpen clamped down from that point forward.

Bullpen Lockdown
Christian Mena (1-0) picked up his first MLB win with a clean sixth and seventh, while Shelby Miller handled the eighth, and Justin Martinez shut the door with a flawless ninth to earn his fourth save of the season. The Diamondbacks bullpen combined for 5.1 innings of shutout relief.

Nationals Can’t Capitalize
Washington had chances—stranding runners in scoring position in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th innings—but couldn’t break through. They finished 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, with six total hits and 11 strikeouts.
