The Arizona Diamondbacks desperately needed a reset after being swept on the road by the Tampa Bay Rays, and on Monday night they found exactly what they were looking for. Behind another dominant performance from Eduardo Rodríguez, home runs from Ketel Marte and Nolan Arenado, and just enough late bullpen work from Paul Sewald, the Diamondbacks opened their homestand with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field on June 29.

Arizona improved to 42-42 on the season, climbing back to the .500 mark while gaining valuable momentum heading into July. The Giants, meanwhile, continued their disappointing season, falling to 35-49 after another frustrating loss in which they out-hit the Diamondbacks but failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

For a club trying to stay alive in the National League Wild Card race, Monday night's victory felt bigger than just one game. It was the kind of complete performance manager Torey Lovullo has been searching for over the past week: timely offense, elite starting pitching, solid defense, and just enough resilience to survive a ninth-inning scare.
The Diamondbacks wasted no time energizing the Chase Field crowd.

On the very first pitch of the bottom of the first inning, Ketel Marte reminded everyone why he remains one of the most dangerous leadoff hitters in baseball. Marte crushed a solo home run into the seats, his 16th homer of the season, immediately giving Arizona a 1-0 lead and setting the tone for the evening.

It was another chapter in what has become an outstanding 2026 campaign for the Diamondbacks' All-Star second baseman. Marte continues to produce elite numbers from the top of Arizona's lineup while providing both power and consistency every single night.

San Francisco answered with a run of its own to even the score, but Eduardo Rodríguez never allowed the Giants to seize momentum.

The veteran left-hander has quietly become the unquestioned ace of Arizona's rotation this season, and Monday was another masterclass in pitching efficiency. Rodríguez consistently stayed ahead in the count, mixed his pitches beautifully, and limited San Francisco's lineup to weak contact throughout seven outstanding innings.

He scattered just five hits, allowed only one earned run, walked one batter, and kept the Giants guessing from the first inning until his final pitch. While the strikeout totals weren't eye-popping, Rodríguez once again proved that dominating hitters isn't always about overpowering them. His command, location and ability to induce soft contact continue to make him one of the National League's most effective pitchers.

Rodríguez improved to 7-2 on the season while lowering his ERA to an impressive 2.21, strengthening his case as Arizona's most reliable starter through the first half of the year.

While Rodríguez controlled the game on the mound, the Diamondbacks offense delivered the biggest inning of the night in the fifth.

Facing Giants starter Tyler Mahle, Arizona loaded the bases before forcing San Francisco to make an early trip to its bullpen. The Diamondbacks capitalized immediately, stringing together quality at-bats and manufacturing three runs during the rally to build a comfortable 4-1 advantage.

The inning effectively ended Mahle's night after just 4⅓ innings of work. The veteran right-hander allowed four earned runs while dropping to 1-8 on the season, continuing what has been a difficult campaign for the Giants starter.

Arizona wasn't finished adding insurance.

Leading off the sixth inning, Nolan Arenado launched a solo home run to left field, extending the Diamondbacks' lead to 5-1. The veteran third baseman continues to provide exactly what Arizona envisioned when adding his bat to the lineup—a dependable run producer capable of changing games with one swing.

The home run proved enormous as the Giants slowly chipped away during the late innings.

Despite collecting only six hits all night, the Diamondbacks made nearly every offensive opportunity count. Two home runs, timely situational hitting, and an explosive fifth inning proved enough to overcome San Francisco's nine-hit attack.

Arizona's bullpen allowed San Francisco to claw back into contention, eventually trimming the deficit to a single run entering the final outs. Paul Sewald was called upon to record the save, but the veteran closer was forced to navigate plenty of drama.

San Francisco pushed across two runs in the ninth inning and brought the tying run into scoring position, creating plenty of anxiety inside Chase Field. Sewald surrendered three hits during the inning but managed to record the final outs before the Giants could complete the comeback.

It wasn't his cleanest appearance of the season, but it counted just the same.

Sewald collected his 19th save of 2026, preserving the 5-4 victory and allowing Arizona to celebrate a much-needed win after a frustrating weekend.

One of the more remarkable aspects of Monday night's game was how efficiently Arizona converted offense.
The Giants actually finished with nine hits compared to Arizona's six, but baseball often comes down to timing rather than quantity. The Diamondbacks delivered their biggest hits with runners on base, while Rodríguez consistently stranded Giants baserunners throughout his seven innings of work.

Defensively, Arizona continued to play fundamentally sound baseball, avoiding costly mistakes and giving Rodríguez every opportunity to work deep into the game.

The victory also represented an important emotional reset.

The Diamondbacks entered Monday having scored only four total runs during their three-game sweep against Tampa Bay. Questions had begun to surface about an offense that had suddenly gone quiet, but Monday's performance demonstrated that the lineup remains capable of producing timely power and manufacturing runs when opportunities arise.

With Ketel Marte continuing his All-Star caliber season, Nolan Arenado providing veteran leadership in the middle of the order, and Eduardo Rodríguez pitching like one of the National League's best starters, Arizona possesses the foundation necessary to make a second-half push.

Returning to the .500 mark may not seem significant in late June, but after the disappointing road trip, Monday's victory could become an important turning point.

The Diamondbacks now have an opportunity to build momentum against a struggling Giants club before turning their attention toward an important stretch of games leading into the All-Star break. If Arizona continues to receive this level of starting pitching while its offense produces timely power, the conversation around the Diamondbacks could quickly shift from surviving to legitimately competing for a National League Wild Card berth.

For one night, at least, everything clicked.

The bats delivered early. Eduardo Rodríguez dominated once again. Nolan Arenado added the insurance. Paul Sewald survived the chaos.

​Most importantly, the Diamondbacks walked off the field back at .500 with a 5-4 victory and renewed confidence that better baseball may still lie ahead.
