At the time, it appeared the Mets might gain control behind strong pitching from Clay Holmes, who entered the game carrying one of the lowest ERAs in Major League Baseball.

The Mets had opportunities to build on that momentum, but Kelly settled in quickly and never allowed New York to deliver another breakthrough hit.

The early 1-0 lead would ultimately become the Mets’ only run of the night.
