Arizona Diamondbacks Dominate Pittsburgh in Statement Win

The Arizona Diamondbacks delivered one of their most complete performances of the 2026 MLB season Tuesday night, shutting out the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-0 at Chase Field in Phoenix. Behind a dominant outing from Eduardo Rodriguez and a breakout sixth inning, Arizona snapped a four-game losing streak and evened its record at 17-17.

After struggling through a rough stretch, the Diamondbacks came out aggressive early and never let up. Strong pitching, disciplined at-bats, and timely hitting all came together in a game that could serve as a turning point for the club.

Eduardo Rodriguez Silences Pirates Lineup
Eduardo Rodriguez set the tone from the very first inning, delivering a composed and commanding performance on the mound. The left-hander worked seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Pittsburgh never found any rhythm against him. Rodriguez mixed his pitches effectively, stayed ahead in counts, and shut down every scoring opportunity the Pirates tried to create. His outing not only secured the win but also gave Arizona much-needed stability during a critical stretch of the season.

Diamondbacks Strike Early Behind Ketel Marte
Arizona wasted no time getting on the board. Ketel Marte opened the first inning with a triple into the left-center gap, immediately putting pressure on Pirates starter Bubba Chandler. Corbin Carroll followed with a walk, and Adrian Del Castillo brought Marte home with a sacrifice fly.

Moments later, Ildemaro Vargas lined an RBI double to center field, extending the lead to 2-0. That early production gave Arizona control of the game and allowed Rodriguez to settle in comfortably on the mound.

Sixth Inning Breaks the Game Wide Open
The defining moment came in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Diamondbacks turned a close game into a rout. Arizona capitalized on control issues from the Pirates’ bullpen and strung together a series of quality at-bats.

Gabriel Moreno got things started with an RBI double, and Geraldo Perdomo followed with a two-run double that pushed the lead further out of reach. Ketel Marte later helped bring in another run, and Corbin Carroll capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.

By the end of the frame, Arizona had scored five runs and taken a commanding 7-0 lead, effectively putting the game away.

Moreno and Perdomo Deliver in Key Moments
Gabriel Moreno and Geraldo Perdomo played crucial roles in the sixth-inning rally. Moreno’s double ignited the offense, while Perdomo’s two-run hit broke the game open.

Their ability to deliver in high-pressure situations highlighted the Diamondbacks’ offensive depth, something that had been missing during their recent losing streak.

Pirates Offense Never Gets Started
The Pirates struggled all night against Arizona’s pitching staff. They managed just two hits and failed to score, with their best chance coming in the fourth inning when Bryan Reynolds reached base and advanced to third. Rodriguez shut the door with a key strikeout, and Pittsburgh never threatened again.

Arizona’s bullpen maintained the momentum, closing out the final two innings without allowing any damage and preserving the shutout.

Diamondbacks Add Late Insurance
Arizona continued to apply pressure in the eighth inning. Alek Thomas doubled to center, setting up an RBI single from Ketel Marte. Adrian Del Castillo followed with another run-scoring hit, extending the lead to 9-0.

By that point, the outcome was no longer in doubt, and Chase Field had come alive as the Diamondbacks cruised to victory.

Final Score and Game Takeaways
The Diamondbacks finished with nine runs on nine hits, while holding the Pirates to just two hits in a dominant all-around performance. Eduardo Rodriguez earned the win, improving to 3-0 on the season, while Bubba Chandler took the loss for Pittsburgh.

More importantly, Arizona showed signs of life after a difficult stretch. The combination of strong starting pitching, improved situational hitting, and aggressive baserunning could be exactly what they need to build momentum moving forward.

What’s Next for Arizona
The series continues at Chase Field with another strong pitching matchup on deck. Arizona will send Michael Soroka to the mound against Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes, followed by Zac Gallen facing Mitch Keller in the series finale.

With this win, the Diamondbacks have an opportunity to turn things around and build consistency during their homestand.
