The Arizona Diamondbacks had the perfect start Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Unfortunately for Torey Lovullo's club, that early momentum vanished almost immediately.

After Geraldo Perdomo blasted the second pitch of the game over the right field wall to give Arizona a quick 1-0 advantage, the Diamondbacks managed just seven singles the rest of the night while the Tampa Bay Rays capitalized on two swings of the bat to earn a convincing 6-1 victory in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

The loss drops Arizona to 41-40, preventing the Diamondbacks from climbing further above the .500 mark as they continue fighting for position in a crowded National League Wild Card race. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay improved to 46-33, once again showing why the Rays remain one of the American League's most fundamentally sound teams.

Diamondbacks Strike First, But Rays Respond Immediately
Arizona could not have scripted a better beginning.

Leading off the top of the first inning, Geraldo Perdomo worked the count full before driving a home run into the right-field seats. It was his fifth home run of the season and gave Zac Gallen an immediate 1-0 cushion before he even threw a pitch.

Unfortunately, that lead lasted only a few minutes.

In the bottom of the inning, Tampa Bay loaded the bases before Junior Caminero crushed a three-run home run to left-center field. Just like that, Arizona's early advantage disappeared, and the Rays never looked back.

Instead of forcing Tampa Bay to play from behind, the Diamondbacks suddenly found themselves chasing the game for the remaining eight innings.

Zac Gallen's Difficult Season Takes Another Turn
Every time it appears Zac Gallen may be turning a corner, another frustrating outing seems to follow.
Friday night was another example.

The Diamondbacks' ace settled in nicely after the disastrous opening inning, retiring hitters efficiently and keeping Arizona within striking distance for much of the game. However, the damage from the first inning—and one more mistake later in the game—proved too much to overcome.

Gallen finished the evening pitching 6.2 innings, allowing six hits, five earned runs, while walking two hitters. Perhaps most surprising was that he failed to record a single strikeout, an unusual stat line for one of baseball's premier strikeout pitchers over the past several seasons.

His record dropped to 3-7, while his ERA climbed to 6.15, numbers that remain far below the expectations Arizona had entering the 2026 season.

The final blow came in the seventh inning when Cedric Mullins launched a three-run homer that effectively put the game out of reach.

Between Caminero's first-inning blast and Mullins' seventh-inning shot, every Tampa Bay run came via the long ball.

Diamondbacks Offense Can't Cash In
The final box score tells one of the strangest stories of the night.

Arizona actually out-hit Tampa Bay 8-6.

Normally, winning the hit battle by two would put a team in excellent position to win the game.

Instead, the Diamondbacks scored just once.

The problem wasn't getting runners on base—it was driving them home.

Arizona repeatedly failed to produce timely hits with runners aboard, while the Rays maximized nearly every offensive opportunity they created. Tampa Bay finished with only six hits, but two of those left the ballpark with multiple runners on base.

That difference in situational hitting ultimately decided the game.

Nick Martinez Silences Arizona
While Zac Gallen continues searching for consistency, Tampa Bay received another outstanding performance from veteran right-hander Nick Martinez.

Martinez worked 5.2 innings, allowing just one earned run while scattering six hits. He consistently worked ahead in the count, limited hard contact after Perdomo's leadoff homer, and forced Arizona hitters to chase pitches outside the strike zone.

The Rays bullpen handled the final 3.1 innings with little drama, preventing the Diamondbacks from mounting any late comeback.

Defensive Baseball Remains Clean
Neither club committed an error, and both teams played fundamentally sound defense throughout the evening.

Arizona turned several key defensive plays behind Gallen to keep the game close until the seventh inning, but the offense simply never rewarded those efforts.

Turning Point
Although Mullins' three-run homer created the final margin, the biggest moment of the night came in the bottom of the first inning.

After Perdomo energized Arizona with his leadoff home run, the Rays immediately answered with Caminero's three-run blast. Instead of allowing the Diamondbacks to dictate the pace, Tampa Bay completely shifted the momentum and forced Arizona into comeback mode almost immediately.

That first inning changed the complexion of the entire game.

Arizona finished with 1 run on 8 hits without committing an error. Tampa Bay scored 6 runs on 6 hits, also playing error-free baseball.

Geraldo Perdomo accounted for Arizona's only run with his leadoff home run.

Zac Gallen pitched 6.2 innings while allowing five earned runs.

Nick Martinez improved to 7-2, while Gallen fell to 3-7.

What This Loss Means for Arizona
The Diamondbacks have now reached the halfway point of the season still searching for consistency.

Their offense has shown the ability to explode on certain nights, but games like Friday continue to highlight an ongoing issue: converting baserunners into runs. Collecting eight hits should typically be enough to remain competitive, yet Arizona managed only one run because the big hit never arrived after Perdomo's first-inning homer.

Even more concerning is the continued struggle of Zac Gallen. Arizona entered the season expecting him to anchor the rotation, but through 81 games, his ERA remains above 6.00. If the Diamondbacks hope to remain in the postseason race throughout the summer, they'll need Gallen to rediscover the form that made him one of the National League's elite starters.

Looking Ahead
​Arizona will look to even the series on Saturday before Sunday's finale in Tampa. With the National League Wild Card race expected to remain tight throughout the second half of the season, every series carries added importance.

Splitting on the road remains a realistic goal, but the Diamondbacks will need more timely hitting and stronger pitching if they hope to leave Tampa with momentum.
