Diamondbacks Hold Off Rockies 5-4 Behind Ketel Marte’s Blast and Zac Gallen’s Strong Start

Sunday, May 24, 2026

The Arizona Diamondbacks continued their strong stretch at Chase Field Saturday night, grinding out a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies in front of 33,891 fans under an open roof in Phoenix. Arizona improved to 27-24 on the season and moved ahead in the four-game series 2-1 behind timely hitting, a powerful swing from Ketel Marte, and a much-needed bounce-back outing from Zac Gallen.

Arizona entered the night having won six of its last eight games while the starting rotation carried momentum into the matchup with eight consecutive quality starts at home. The Diamondbacks nearly matched that club record again thanks to Gallen settling in after an early scare and helping Arizona maintain control throughout most of the night.

The game also marked a memorable night for Diamondbacks prospect Tommy Troy, who received his first MLB call-up before first pitch.

Fast Start Sets Tone for Arizona
Arizona threatened immediately in the bottom of the first inning after Ketel Marte singled and Corbin Carroll ripped a double into right field. The Diamondbacks loaded pressure onto Colorado starter Michael Lorenzen, but the Rockies escaped the inning without allowing a run.

Both starting pitchers settled in early before Arizona finally broke through in the third inning.

Ryan Waldschmidt started the rally with a single before Marte worked a walk. After Carroll struck out, Geraldo Perdomo delivered an RBI single to left field to score Waldschmidt for the game’s first run. Nolan Arenado followed moments later with a clutch two-run double to left, driving in both Perdomo and Marte to extend Arizona’s lead to 3-0.

Arenado’s swing gave the Diamondbacks a major early cushion and energized the Chase Field crowd.

Rockies Battle Back
Colorado answered quickly in the top of the fourth inning after loading the bases with no outs against Gallen. Troy Johnston delivered an RBI single before Ezequiel Tovar added a run-producing groundout to cut Arizona’s lead to 3-2.

Gallen managed to avoid further damage after escaping a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout and flyout.

Arizona responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning thanks to one of its hottest hitters.

After Tim Tawa singled, Ketel Marte crushed a towering two-run homer deep into right field. The 424-foot blast was Marte’s eighth home run of the season and pushed the Diamondbacks back in front 5-2.

Marte continued his impressive stretch at the plate, extending his hitting streak to seven games while providing the biggest swing of the night for Arizona.

Zac Gallen Grinds Through Five
While Gallen was not completely dominant, the right-hander gave Arizona an important stabilizing performance. He worked through traffic multiple times and limited Colorado enough to secure his third win of the season.

The Rockies added another run in the sixth inning after Troy Johnston singled, stole second, and later scored on a Sterlin Thompson groundout. Arizona then turned the game over to the bullpen with Brandon Pfaadt entering in relief.

Colorado continued to pressure Arizona late.

TJ Rumfield launched a solo home run in the eighth inning to trim the lead to 5-4 and put the tying run aboard. Kevin Ginkel entered and helped stop the rally before Paul Sewald closed the door in the ninth inning for his 12th save of the season.

Sewald retired the side in order, finishing the game with a strikeout of Hunter Goodman to seal the win.

Offensive Leaders
Arizona collected timely contributions throughout the lineup:

  • Ketel Marte: 3 hits, home run, 2 RBI
  • Nolan Arenado: 2-run double
  • Geraldo Perdomo: RBI single
  • Ryan Waldschmidt: 2 hits and scored a run
  • Corbin Carroll extended his hitting streak to 11 games despite being held without a late hit

The Diamondbacks once again showed balance offensively while continuing to get production from the top of the lineup.

Key Takeaways
Arizona’s pitching staff continues to perform well at home despite some late-inning drama. The Diamondbacks have now won seven of their last nine games and continue building momentum in the National League race.

Marte’s bat remains one of the biggest catalysts in the lineup, while Arizona’s bullpen successfully protected another tight lead late.

The Diamondbacks will now look to capture the series Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. Ryne Nelson is expected to start for Arizona against Colorado veteran Jose Quintana. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM MST.
