PHOENIX — Sometimes baseball gives you everything in one night.

A highly anticipated major league debut. A towering three-run home run. A blown ninth-inning lead. Extra innings. And finally, a walk-off celebration that sent 19,709 fans home smiling.

The Arizona Diamondbacks battled through every bit of adversity Tuesday night, defeating the Athletics 6-5 in 10 innings at Chase Field to even the three-game series and improve to 52-49 on the season.

The victory wasn't perfect, but it was exactly the kind of resilient win that playoff contenders often need during the dog days of July.

Kohl Drake Delivers in Major League Debut
Much of the attention entering Tuesday belonged to rookie left-hander Kohl Drake, making his first career major league start.

The 24-year-old looked remarkably comfortable under the bright lights.

After working around a first-inning walk, Drake settled in and consistently attacked the strike zone with confidence. He mixed his pitches effectively, generated swings and misses throughout the evening, and repeatedly escaped trouble before the Athletics could capitalize.

Oakland's biggest opportunity came in the third inning after Lawrence Butler tripled to begin the frame. Alika Williams followed with an RBI single before the Athletics loaded the bases with one out.

Instead of unraveling, Drake showed veteran composure.

Shea Langeliers lined out before Jonah Heim grounded into an inning-ending double play, allowing Arizona to maintain its early lead.

By the time manager Torey Lovullo turned the game over to the bullpen after five innings, Drake had allowed just one earned run while recording five strikeouts in an outstanding major league debut.

His performance also placed him in exclusive franchise company.

Drake became the 10th Diamondbacks starting pitcher in franchise history to throw at least five innings, allow one run or fewer, and record at least five strikeouts in his MLB debut.

For a club searching for pitching consistency heading toward the trade deadline, Drake's emergence could become one of Arizona's biggest developments of the second half.

Max Kepler Provides the Early Fireworks
Arizona wasted little time giving its rookie pitcher offensive support.

Ketel Marte worked a leadoff walk before Gabriel Moreno singled to put two runners aboard.

That brought Max Kepler to the plate.

Kepler crushed Jack Perkins' offering deep into the Arizona night, sending a 392-foot blast into the right-field seats for his second home run of the season.

The three-run shot immediately energized Chase Field and gave the Diamondbacks an early 3-0 advantage.

For much of the evening, that swing looked as though it would stand as the decisive moment.

Kepler finished another productive night at the plate, reaching base multiple times while continuing to provide valuable production in the middle of Arizona's lineup.

Diamondbacks Continue Applying Pressure
While Arizona didn't pile up runs after the opening inning, the offense consistently forced Athletics pitchers to work.
The Diamondbacks collected timely hits from Gabriel Moreno, Tim Tawa, Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll while drawing several key walks throughout the contest.

Perdomo added a double in the fifth inning, while Carroll continued to create havoc on the bases by stealing his 11th base of the season.

The patience at the plate eventually paid dividends again in the seventh.

After Ildemaro Vargas and Jorge Barrosa opened the inning with back-to-back walks, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position.

Ketel Marte then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Vargas to score and extend Arizona's advantage to 4-1.

At the time, the insurance run appeared enormous.

It eventually became necessary.

Bullpen Holds Until the Ninth
Arizona's bullpen pieced together several quality innings after Drake exited.

Taylor Clarke delivered a clean sixth.

Juan Morillo followed with an impressive seventh, striking out two while allowing only one walk.

Ryan Thompson surrendered a solo home run to Shea Langeliers in the eighth but escaped additional damage thanks to an inning-ending double play.

Everything pointed toward another Diamondbacks victory entering the ninth inning with Paul Sewald taking over and Arizona holding a comfortable 4-2 lead.

Then everything changed.

Athletics Rally Stuns Chase Field
Paul Sewald retired the first hitter before Lawrence Butler struck out for the second out.

Only one out remained.

Donovan Walton tripled to center field to suddenly bring the tying run to the plate.

Jacob Wilson didn't miss his opportunity.

Wilson launched a two-run home run into the left-field seats, instantly tying the game at 4-4 and silencing Chase Field.
As Sewald walked off the mound following the inning, loud boos echoed throughout the stadium after another difficult ninth-inning appearance.

Arizona had watched a victory slip away.

But the Diamondbacks weren't finished.

Extra Innings Bring More Drama
The Athletics grabbed their first lead of the evening in the top of the 10th.

Automatic runner Tyler Soderstrom advanced to third before Jonah Heim lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, putting Oakland ahead 5-4.

Arizona suddenly found itself three outs away from a frustrating loss.

Instead, the Diamondbacks mounted one final rally.

Corbin Carroll began the bottom of the 10th as the automatic runner before Gabriel Moreno and Max Kepler both worked walks to load the bases with nobody out.

Nolan Arenado immediately answered.

The veteran third baseman lined a single into center field, scoring Carroll and tying the game while keeping the bases loaded.

Although Tim Tawa struck out looking, Arizona still had another opportunity.

Ildemaro Vargas made sure it didn't go to waste.

Vargas lined a single into left field, bringing home the winning run and sending Diamondbacks players pouring out of the dugout for another memorable walk-off celebration.

Arizona Shows Resilience
Tuesday's victory won't be remembered as Arizona's cleanest game of the season.

The bullpen let another late lead disappear.

The offense left opportunities on the table.

The Athletics refused to go away.

Yet championship-caliber teams often reveal themselves not by avoiding adversity, but by responding to it.

Instead of allowing the ninth-inning collapse to define the night, the Diamondbacks answered immediately when another opportunity presented itself.

The clubhouse celebrated a win that easily could have become one of the season's most frustrating losses.
Instead, Arizona heads into Wednesday's rubber match with momentum restored.

Looking Ahead
The Diamondbacks have an opportunity to capture the series Wednesday afternoon before continuing their push through the National League playoff race.

Arizona will hand the ball to veteran Merrill Kelly (7-8, 5.20 ERA), while the Athletics counter with Gage Jump (3-5, 3.78 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 12:40 p.m. at Chase Field.

If Tuesday proved anything, it's that this Diamondbacks team refuses to quit.

And with Kohl Drake announcing his arrival in impressive fashion, Arizona may have discovered another valuable piece for the stretch run.
