Focused Health 250
NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series
Circuit of the Americas — February 28, 2026

If you blinked on the final restart at Circuit of the Americas, you missed it.
Sixth to first.

Four-wide into Turn 1.
Five laps to decide it.

And when the smoke cleared in Austin, Shane van Gisbergen had delivered one of the boldest late-race moves of the 2026 season to win the Focused Health 250.

This wasn’t a calm road-course chess match.

This was calculated aggression at 140 mph.

The Setting: COTA Demands Precision
The 2.4-mile COTA layout is unforgiving:

  • 20 turns
  • Heavy uphill braking into Turn 1
  • Technical, high-speed esses
  • A long backstretch into Turn 12’s braking zone

Mistakes don’t just cost positions — they cost entire races.

And Saturday’s race had plenty of them.

Stage Results
🔥 Stage 1 (20 Laps) — Winner: Austin Hill
1. Austin Hill
2. Sam Mayer
3. Justin Allgaier
4. Brandon Jones
5. Jesse Love
6. Carson Kvapil
7. Corey Day
8. Austin Green
9. Rajah Caruth
10. Shane van Gisbergen

Hill was sharp early, managing tire wear and defending aggressively through the braking zones. SVG quietly banked stage points in 10th — staying within striking distance.

🚀 Stage 2 (20 Laps) — Winner: Sam Mayer
1. Sam Mayer
2. Justin Allgaier
3. Carson Kvapil
4. Jesse Love
5. Shane van Gisbergen
6. Austin Hill

10. Ryan Sieg

Stage 2 brought more contact and strategy splits. Mayer capitalized on track position, while SVG steadily moved forward.

Mid-Race Drama: Zilisch’s Rollercoaster
Pole-sitter Connor Zilisch looked like the early favorite.

He led 12 laps in Stage 1 and controlled the rhythm — until a left-rear brake rotor failure forced unscheduled repairs and dropped him deep in the field.

He charged back into contention…

Then late contact sent him spinning, leaving him 21st at the finish.

COTA rewards composure.
It punishes chaos.

Final Restart: The Defining Moment
With five laps to go, a late caution reset the field.
Sam Mayer controlled the restart.
Austin Hill lined up close.
SVG restarted sixth.

Into Turn 1 — uphill, heavy braking, four-wide.
Van Gisbergen sent it.

He threaded the inside line, out-braked the competition, and emerged with the lead before the field reached the esses.

From there, he was clinical.
No mistakes.
No over-driving.

Just perfect apexes and smooth exits.

He pulled away to win by 0.780 seconds over Austin Hill.

This wasn’t clean road racing.
It was controlled aggression.

Major Storylines
🏆 SVG Is the Road-Course Standard
He didn’t dominate the entire race.
He dominated when it mattered.
That late-restart bravery is what separates road-course specialists from contenders.

📈 Austin Hill’s Consistency Matters
Second place at COTA adds to an already strong early-season resume. In a Chase-style format, stacking podiums is championship gold.

🚀 Brent Crews Turns Heads
In his series debut, Crews led laps and finished sixth — becoming the first driver under 18 to lead in the series since 1998.
That’s not just promising.
That’s attention-grabbing.

🔥 The Young Core Is Real
Jesse Love. Corey Day. Sammy Smith.
The next generation isn’t waiting.
They’re already here.

Championship Implications
Under the return of The Chase format:

  • Wins earn bonus points
  • Top 16 in points qualify
  • Stage points build cushion

SVG’s win adds pressure to the garage — especially on future road courses.
Meanwhile, drivers like Hill continue stacking consistent finishes that matter over 33 races.

What’s Next: Phoenix Raceway
From flowing road course to flat one-mile oval.
The series heads to Phoenix Raceway for the GOVX 200 on March 7.

Completely different rhythm.
Completely different challenge.
COTA rewarded braking and bravery.

Phoenix rewards tire conservation and long-run discipline.
Momentum matters.
But adaptability wins championships.

Final Thoughts
The Focused Health 250 delivered:

  • A fearless four-wide pass
  • Brake failures and comeback attempts
  • Strategic pit calls
  • A defining early-season moment

Shane van Gisbergen didn’t just win at COTA.

He reminded the field:
When the track turns left and right…
He’s the problem everyone has to solve.
