One day after the Arizona Diamondbacks put up two touchdowns and a field goal, while shutting out the Nationals, the two played the final game of the three-game series early afternoon at Chase Field.

With Arizona winning the first two games of the series, they put their ace, Zac Gallen on the mound to complete the sweep. The Nationals countered with MacKenzie Gore.

The two starters dueled it out for the first two innings, with each starter only allowing one run. But after Zac Gallen put down the Nationals in order in the top of the third inning, the Diamondback offense would get on the board in the bottom frame.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Jake McCarthy would triple to right field, which was followed by a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. RBI double to left field, making the score 1-0.

The Nationals would answer in the top of the forth inning with Harold Ramirez shooting an RBI double into center field, bringing the score to 1-1.

Gallen would then pitch a scoreless fifth and sixth inning. And that’s when the Diamondbacks offense stepped up. Pavin Smith would hit an RBI ground out to first, scoring Suarez from third. Geraldo Perdomo would then hit a pinch-hit single to left field, scoring Grichuk. Corbin Carroll would follow with an RBI single to left after Perdomo stole second. And Jose Herrera followed with an RBI double to right center. At the end of the sixth, the Diamondbacks had expanded their lead to 5-1.

The Nationals would add on a run in the top of the eighth inning after Luis Garcia Jr. hit an RBI single to center, scoring Juan Yepez. This brought the score to 5-2, which is where it stood heading into the top of the ninth inning.

Paul Sewald came in for the save in the top of the ninth after the home field turned out the lights and played his entrance music, “Jump Around” by House of Pain.

And with all the excitement….. it got real bad, real quick for the Diamondbacks closer. After walking the leadoff batter and forcing a groundout to first, the wheels came off for Sewald. Jacob Young would score from third on a CJ Abrams double to center, and advanced to third on defensive indifference. Juan Yepez then walked and stole second. James Wood then walked, and that was the evening for Sewald.

Ryan Thompson came in to try and stop the bleeding. After striking out Ramirez with the bases loaded, Thompson would uncork three wild pitches. He would intentionally walk Garcia Jr. and then get Riley Adams to ground out to end the game.

Just like it was written up. Nobody said sweeps were easy!
