GCU Rolls Past Purdue Fort Wayne in Season-Opening Statement Win
The energy inside Global Credit Union Arena on Monday night felt less like a season opener and more like a postseason showcase. Grand Canyon University set the tone early and never wavered, rolling past Purdue Fort Wayne 90–71 on November 3rd, 2025, to open the new campaign with authority.
This wasn’t just a win — it was a message.
GCU looks deep. GCU looks athletic. GCU looks ready.
Fast Start, Big Runs, and Relentless Defense
From the opening tip, GCU imposed its will. A suffocating defensive burst led to a 20–2 run in the first half, with forced turnovers turning into transition buckets and Purdue Fort Wayne scrambling to regain rhythm. The Lopes’ length on the perimeter and active rotations made clean looks nearly impossible, particularly from beyond the arc.
By halftime, the Lopes had built a 49–27 lead, and the building was rocking.
Purdue Fort Wayne tried to claw back in the second half, cutting the deficit to single digits at one point, but every push was answered. GCU reasserted control with ball movement, pace, and steady execution to put the game away for good.
Balanced Scoring Defines This Team
What stood out most was the balance.
Not one star — but several difference-makers.
- Jaden Henley showcased confident shot creation and slashing ability.
- Nana Owusu-Anane was everywhere — rebounds, putbacks, switching on defense, and facilitating.
- Role players stepped in seamlessly, knocking down threes and attacking closeouts.
The Lopes played like a team — 21 assists, efficient shooting, and real chemistry for a lineup still developing identity.
Pace + Depth + Shot-Making = Drew Basketball
This is what Bryce Drew teams do when they are operating at their best:
- Outrun opponents in transition
- Share the ball
- Take and make the right shots
- Defend with physicality and buy-in
And the 2025–26 version looks built to push tempo even more than past seasons.
Atmosphere: Electric — as Always
Another packed house.
Another night where the building itself felt like part of the game plan.
Grand Canyon may not have the biggest fan base in the country — but few fan bases are louder or more connected to a team’s identity.
The home-court advantage is real.
Looking Ahead
The Lopes now shift focus to Youngstown State, coming to Phoenix on Friday. If the opener was any indication, this is a team already playing as if its goals are much bigger than just another WAC title.
This is a group thinking March.
And they’re acting like it.
GCU didn’t just win — they set a tone for the season.
Depth. Defense. Tempo. Swagger. Cohesion.
