With just five games remaining in the regular season, the Arizona Diamondbacks entered tonight's matchup at Chase Field holding a slim 1.5-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the final National League Wild Card spot. After dropping the first game of the series against the San Francisco Giants, Arizona needed a strong performance from Brandon Pfaadt to keep their playoff hopes alive. However, the Giants had other plans, as they delivered a dominant 11-0 victory, leaving the Diamondbacks clinging to their postseason aspirations.

Heading in to tonight’s game, the Arizona Diamondbacks held a slight 1.5 game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the third and final Wild Card spot with just five games remaining.

Arizona would need a strong start by Brandon Pfaadt, especially after the San Francisco Giants took the first game of the series on Monday night, 6-3. Opposing Pfaadt would be Logan Webb for the Giants.

After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, San Francisco would kick off the scoring in the top of the second inning with a solo shot to right field. They would take the lead, 1-0. Arizona would get two runners on base in the bottom of the first, but fail to score.

The Giants would flex their muscles again in the top of the second inning with a home run by Patrick Bailey, giving San Francisco a 2-0 lead. The Giants would try to make it a big inning after putting two more runners on with a walk and a single. Mike Yastrzemski hit a deep shot to right field that looked like ti would be another home run, but Corbin Carroll tracked the ball well, timed his leap, and robbed “Yaz” of a home run.

Arizona continued to struggle in the bottom frame, going down in order against Webb. And that’s when the flood gates opened up for the Giants in the top of the third.

San Francisco got their first two runners on base in the top of the third inning with a single to right and a double to center. With one out, Michael Conforto would hit a 3-run shot to left center field. Later in the inning, with one on and two outs, Arizona shortstop Geraldo Perdomo would be tagged with an error, putting two runners on for Brett Wisely. Wisely would kindly clear the bases with a 3-run home run to right field. This gave the Giants a 7-0 lead.

Still unable to solve Logan Webb, the Diamondbacks failed to get a runner to second in the bottom of the third inning. The Giants kindly responded with a solo home run by Heliot Ramos in the top of the fourth, extending San Francisco’s lead to 8-0 after four.

After Arizona went scoreless once again in the fourth inning, the Giants continued to pad their lead with a two run shot by Tyler Fitzgerald to left field bringing the score to 10-0.

Arizona went down in order again in the bottom of the fifth inning as Logan Webb continued to deal for the Giants on the mound. Diamondbacks pitcher Yaber Diaz was finally able to sit down the Giants in order and keep them off the board.

Both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the top of the 8th when the Giants loaded up the bases. Ironically, it was not a hit, but a walk that would score the lone run in the inning for San Francisco. The RBI walk was by Casey Schmidt. This gave the Giants an 11-0 lead over the Diamondbacks.

And that’s where the score would stand at the end with the San Francisco Giants defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks by the final score of 11-0. Logan Webb gets the win for the Giants, and Brandon Pfaadt is handed the loss.

The Diamondbacks’ Wild Card hopes now hang in the balance, with their lead over the Braves reduced to just half a game. They’ll look to rebound in the series finale tomorrow, hoping to secure a much-needed victory at Chase Field. With only four games left in the season, every game is crucial as Arizona fights for their playoff lives.
