Guardians Silence D-backs’ Bats in Series Opener at Chase Field

The Arizona Diamondbacks returned home Monday night hoping to bounce back from a disappointing series in Colorado, but instead ran into Cleveland’s Gavin Williams, who delivered a sharp outing to lead the Guardians to a 3-1 win in Phoenix.

Despite showing late life in the ninth inning with a Geraldo Perdomo RBI triple, the Diamondbacks once again struggled offensively, dropping to 60–66 on the season. Cleveland, meanwhile, snapped its three-game skid and improved to 64–60, keeping pace in the American League Wild Card hunt.

Pre-Game Context

  • Diamondbacks: Coming off three straight losses at Coors Field, Arizona entered this series 6–4 in their last 10 but sliding in the Wild Card chase, now 6.5 games back of the New York Mets.
  • Guardians: Also losers of three straight, Cleveland came in just 3.5 games behind the Yankees for the final AL Wild Card spot.
  • Pitching Matchup: Gavin Williams (CLE) vs. Zac Gallen (AZ). Williams sought redemption after a rough outing against Miami, while Gallen looked to build on a solid performance in Texas.

How the Game Unfolded

Early Action

Cleveland’s offense didn’t waste time. Rookie C.J. Kayfus launched a solo home run in the second inning, giving the Guardians a 1–0 lead. Two innings later, Brayan Rocchio added insurance with a two-run homer in the fifth, putting Cleveland up 3–0.

Zac Gallen was otherwise sharp, scattering six hits and limiting damage, but his counterpart stole the show.

Williams in Control

Gavin Williams silenced Arizona’s bats across six innings, striking out five while allowing just four hits. Arizona’s only real threat came in the sixth inning when Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. reached base with one out, but reliever Erik Sabrowski entered and struck out Tyler Locklear before inducing a groundout to escape the jam.

Late Push Falls Short

The Guardians bullpen kept the D-backs quiet until the ninth inning. Down to their final out, Arizona finally broke through when Geraldo Perdomo tripled in Blaze Alexander. The crowd of 16,815 came alive, but Ketel Marte struck out swinging to end the comeback bid.

Cleveland closer Cade Smith earned his seventh save, closing out the 3-1 win.
