The Arizona Diamondbacks entered today’s game against the New York Mets riding a wave of momentum, having won seven of their last eight games, including a solid 8-5 victory yesterday. Facing off in the “rubber match” of the series, Arizona knew they were up against a formidable opponent, with the Mets sending their star pitcher David Peterson to the mound. Arizona countered with Ryne Nelson, who has shown consistency in recent starts. As the game unfolded, it turned into a nail-biter that would ultimately be decided in the final inning.

The Mets would get on the board first when Pete Alonso crushed a skyscraper shot to centerfield, giving New York a 1-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks would respond in the bottom of the third with a two-out walk by Perdomo, followed by a 2-run home run by Randal Grichuk. This gave Arizona a 2-1 lead.

And that’s where the score stood until the top of the sixth when Francisco Lindor led off the inning with a solo shot to right field, tying the game at 2-2.

Arizona would threaten with a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Peterson got the Diamondbacks’ Kevin Newman to ground out into a double play to end the inning.

The score remained tied up heading into the top of the ninth inning. Arizona put the ball in the hands of their young flamethrower, Justin Martinez to face Alonso. He would strike Alonso out. However, Jesse Winker would double to left field in the next at bat. The Mets then pinch-ran for Winker with Tyrone Taylor.

After a J.D. Martinez fly out to right which advanced Taylor to third, Jose Iglesias would knock him in with a single to center field that was just off the glove of Geraldo Perdomo at shortstop. The Martinez would then strike out Jeff McNeil for the final out of the inning.

Edwin Diaz would come in for the Mets to attempt the save in the bottom of the ninth. After striking out both Lourdes Gurriel Jr., and Josh Bell, Diaz would get Jake McCarthy to pop out to shallow center for the final out.

The winning pitcher for the Mets went to Jose Butto who pitched a scoreless 8th. The save went to Edwin Diaz. The loss went to the Diamondbacks Justin Martinez.

​Despite a strong effort from Ryne Nelson and some timely hitting from Randal Grichuk, the Arizona Diamondbacks fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the New York Mets. The ninth-inning heroics from the Mets, coupled with a lockdown save from Edwin Diaz, sealed the win for New York. Arizona now turns their attention to a pivotal series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Zac Gallen set to take the mound against Clayton Kershaw in tomorrow night’s opener.
