If this were scripted, the only way to make the NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville any better for Hendrick Motorsports, it would have been to write in Alex Bowman in 4th place instead of 7th. But finishing 1,2,3 isn't bad either. As a matter of fact, Byron, Larson, and Elliott became the first three teammates in Martinsville history to finish in the first three spots. To put a cherry on top, it was the same day that Hendrick Motorsports was celebrating their 40th Anniversary and had over 1500 current/former employees and their families celebrating at the track.
As far as the entire race goes, I go over all the stats and latest news every week prior to picking my NASCAR DFS lineup on DraftKings. And to be honest, names like Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott were up there as potential "dominators." They were mentioned along with Joey Logano (finished 6th), Ryan Blaney (finished 5th), Martin Truex, Jr. (finished 18th), and Denny Hamlin, who finished 11th. But nobody mentioned William Byron who started back in the middle of the pack in 18th.
Byron was 6th fastest in practice, but you really can't judge how a car is going to do in the actual race based on how fast a driver is in practice. For example, Corey Lajoie was the fastest car of the field in practice. Yet he finished in 32nd place.
Hamlin was actually running around 6th place when the final caution came out, forcing overtime and a "green, white, checkered" finish. Hamlin decided to pit for four new tires but almost nobody came with him and he ended up finishing in the 11th position.
Only 14 cars actually finished on the lead lap at Martinsville. But the finishing order was led by Hendrick Motorsports teammates William Byron, Kyle Larson, and Chase Elliott. Bubba Wallace and Ryan Blaney rounded out the Top 5.
The "cherry on top" for the employees of Hendrick Motorsports was when William Byron did a burnout at the exit of Turn 2, where they were all gathered. Team Owner, Rick Hendrick took in the victory from home as he was recovering from knee surgery.
The NASCAR Cup Series is at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, April 14th. That race will take the green flag right around 1230 PST, 330 EST.
