Shane van Gisbergen reminded the NASCAR world once again why he is considered the best road-course driver in the sport today after delivering a stunning victory at Watkins Glen International on May 10, 2026.

The Trackhouse Racing driver looked nearly unbeatable throughout the afternoon in the No. 97 Chevrolet, but what made the victory unforgettable was not just the dominance early in the race. It was the incredible comeback during the closing laps after a green-flag pit cycle dropped him deep in the field.

SVG stormed from outside the Top 20 back to the lead in one of the most impressive road-course drives NASCAR fans have seen in years.

SVG Starts From Pole and Controls the Race
Van Gisbergen entered the weekend as the favorite and immediately backed it up during qualifying by capturing the pole position with a blazing lap around Watkins Glen.

From the drop of the green flag, the New Zealand native showed elite speed through every section of the track. His braking entering the bus stop chicane, his smooth exits through the carousel, and his ability to attack the esses gave him a major advantage over the rest of the field.

The Trackhouse Racing team also brought a perfectly balanced race car that allowed SVG to maintain long-run speed while others struggled with tire wear and braking issues.

Throughout the first two stages, van Gisbergen controlled the pace and led the majority of the laps while several championship contenders battled handling problems and strategy decisions behind him.

Late in the race, a caution caused by debris from Joey Logano’s tire completely shifted the strategy landscape.

Over the next several laps, the Trackhouse Racing driver methodically carved through the field with surgical precision. He passed playoff-caliber drivers one after another while laying down qualifying-style lap times deep into the run.
Fans watching at Watkins Glen and on television witnessed a masterclass in road-course racing.

Van Gisbergen attacked corners aggressively under braking while maintaining incredible throttle control exiting turns. His pace advantage over the field was staggering.

With less than 10 laps remaining, SVG finally caught Ty Gibbs for the lead and completed the pass cleanly before immediately pulling away from the field.

From there, he cruised to victory and crossed the finish line more than seven seconds ahead of the competition.

Another Watkins Glen Victory for SVG
This marked Shane van Gisbergen’s second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victory at Watkins Glen International and further solidified his reputation as the king of NASCAR road-course racing.

Since joining NASCAR full-time, SVG has transformed road-course events into must-watch races because of the level of dominance he brings whenever the series turns left and right.

Trackhouse has become known for aggressive drivers, bold strategy, and strong road-course programs, and SVG has elevated the organization even further with his rapid success in the Cup Series.

The chemistry between van Gisbergen and the No. 97 team was evident all weekend, especially during the final run when the strategy and execution came together perfectly.

Connor Zilisch Shows Future Star Potential
One of the biggest storylines of the afternoon came from Connor Zilisch.

The young driver looked capable of challenging for the victory late in the race and showed tremendous speed throughout the event. However, a flat tire during the closing laps ended his hopes of battling SVG for the win.

Even though the result was disappointing, Zilisch’s performance reinforced the growing belief that he is one of NASCAR’s future stars on road courses.

Hendrick Motorsports Struggles at Watkins Glen
While SVG and Trackhouse celebrated, several major contenders endured difficult afternoons.

Hendrick Motorsports struggled to find speed throughout the race, with multiple drivers finishing well outside the Top 10. Chase Elliott, traditionally one of the strongest road racers in NASCAR, never looked like a serious threat for the victory.

Kyle Larson also battled issues throughout the day, while William Byron suffered damage that effectively eliminated him from contention.

The performance gap between SVG and the rest of the field was impossible to ignore.
