The Phoenix Mercury earned one of their biggest wins of the 2026 WNBA season on Wednesday night, defeating the Indiana Fever 111-109 in a thrilling contest at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Just two days after suffering an 86-77 loss to the Fever, Phoenix responded with one of its most complete offensive performances of the year, overcoming an early deficit and executing in the closing minutes to split the two-game series.

In front of a crowd of 16,128 fans, the Mercury shot nearly 60 percent from the field and showcased balanced scoring, timely defense, and clutch free-throw shooting to secure the victory. The win improved Phoenix to 6-13 on the season while handing Indiana a frustrating loss despite another explosive offensive performance.

Indiana controlled the opening quarter behind the hot shooting of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. The Fever connected on 13 of their first 18 field goal attempts while knocking down five three-pointers, racing out to a 35-29 lead after the first ten minutes. Clark looked comfortable running the offense despite entering the game with a lingering back injury, scoring 13 first-quarter points and helping Indiana establish an early rhythm.

Phoenix never allowed the game to get away. The Mercury steadily chipped away throughout the second quarter as veteran forward DeWanna Bonner sparked the offense with 11 of her 13 points before halftime. By the break, Indiana's once-comfortable lead had been reduced to just 55-53, setting up an entertaining second half between two teams determined to earn a split of the brief series.

The third quarter featured outstanding basketball from both clubs. Kelsey Mitchell caught fire from beyond the arc, helping Indiana maintain a narrow advantage while continuing one of the best shooting nights of her career. The momentum shifted, however, with 5:15 remaining in the quarter when Caitlin Clark exited the game because of her back injury and did not return. Before leaving, Clark had totaled 19 points and eight assists, but Indiana was forced to finish the game without its primary playmaker.

Phoenix took full advantage of the opportunity.

Led by Alyssa Thomas, the Mercury controlled the pace during the fourth quarter while consistently attacking the basket. Thomas finished with 24 points on an efficient 12-for-17 shooting performance while adding eight assists and four rebounds. Whether she was creating for teammates or finishing around the rim herself, Thomas delivered whenever Phoenix needed a basket.

Kahleah Copper once again proved why she remains one of the WNBA's premier scorers. Copper poured in a game-high 28 points by relentlessly attacking Indiana's defense and earning repeated trips to the free-throw line. She converted an outstanding 15 of her 16 free throw attempts, with several coming during the game's most critical moments. Rather than relying on contested perimeter shots, Copper continually pressured the Fever defense, forcing fouls and helping Phoenix control the game's closing minutes.

One of the night's biggest surprises came from Valériane Ayayi, who recorded a career-high 19 points while providing timely scoring throughout the contest. Her calm demeanor under pressure was on full display late in the fourth quarter when she knocked down two crucial free throws after a flagrant foul against Indiana extended Phoenix's lead during the final two minutes.

Rookie Noémie Brochant continued to impress with perhaps her most complete performance of the season. The young guard finished with 12 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and three steals while demonstrating poise well beyond her years. Her ability to facilitate the offense allowed Phoenix to maintain its rhythm even during Indiana's scoring runs.

Indiana refused to go away.

Mitchell produced one of the finest offensive performances of her career, finishing with 30 points while shooting 11-for-16 from the field and an incredible 7-for-9 from three-point range. Her seven made three-pointers tied for the second-most in Fever franchise history, and her 13th career 30-point game further cemented her place among the league's elite scorers.

Aliyah Boston also delivered another outstanding performance, scoring 23 points while adding nine rebounds and five assists. The All-Star center continued her climb through the Fever record books by moving into second place in franchise history in career rebounds. However, one of the game's defining moments came with just over two minutes remaining when Boston was assessed a flagrant foul while defending Kahleah Copper. The resulting free throws, followed by two more from Ayayi, expanded Phoenix's lead to six points and ultimately proved to be the difference in a game decided by only two.

Statistically, the Mercury turned in one of their most efficient offensive performances of the season. Phoenix finished 39-for-66 from the field, good for an impressive 59.1 percent shooting, while recording 21 assists and consistently generating quality looks throughout the game. Their aggressive approach resulted in 33 free throw attempts, where they converted 26 points that became the deciding factor in the victory.

Indiana's offense was equally impressive, finishing with 109 points and shooting efficiently for most of the evening. However, Clark's injury late in the third quarter and Phoenix's superior execution during the final possessions prevented the Fever from completing the comeback.

​For Phoenix, the victory represented more than simply ending a losing streak. After dropping the first meeting between the teams earlier in the week, the Mercury demonstrated resilience, composure, and balanced offensive execution against one of the WNBA's most talented young teams. Alyssa Thomas controlled the offense, Kahleah Copper dominated at the free-throw line, Valériane Ayayi enjoyed a career night, and Noémie Brochant continued her emergence as a reliable contributor. If Phoenix can build upon this performance, the Mercury may have found the formula needed to make a strong push during the second half of the season.
