The Phoenix Mercury may have found the spark they desperately needed.

Just days after making one of the biggest moves of the WNBA season, the Mercury debuted newly acquired All-Star guard Kelsey Plum and immediately looked like a different basketball team. Behind an explosive offensive performance from Kahleah Copper and an impressive first game in orange and purple from Plum, Phoenix defeated the Chicago Sky 106-101 Monday night at Wintrust Arena.

For a Mercury team searching for momentum during the second half of the season, this wasn't simply another victory. It felt like the beginning of a new chapter.

Phoenix improved to 12-19 with one of its highest-scoring performances of the season while showing an offensive ceiling fans have been waiting to see.

From the opening tip, this game had the feel of a shootout.

Chicago grabbed a narrow 27-26 lead after the first quarter as both offenses traded baskets at a blistering pace. Rather than panic on the road, Phoenix responded with its best basketball of the night in the second quarter. The Mercury tightened their defense, controlled the pace, and repeatedly attacked the paint, outscoring Chicago 29-20 to take a 55-47 halftime advantage.

The Sky weren't finished.

Chicago exploded for 30 points in the third quarter, forcing the Mercury into another high-pressure finish. Every time Phoenix looked ready to pull away, Chicago answered with another run, turning what had once been a comfortable lead into a tense final few minutes.

That's when Phoenix's stars took over.

Kahleah Copper once again reminded everyone why she remains one of the WNBA's premier scorers. Facing her former franchise, Copper delivered a sensational 31-point performance, pouring in 20 of those points during the second half. Whether it was attacking the rim, finishing through contact, or knocking down clutch jumpers, Copper consistently answered every Chicago run with one of her own.

The former WNBA Finals MVP looked completely in control during the closing minutes, refusing to allow the Sky to complete the comeback.

While Copper carried the scoring load, much of the attention centered on Kelsey Plum.

After arriving in Phoenix in one of the league's biggest blockbuster trades, Plum made an immediate impact in her Mercury debut. She finished with 20 points while displaying exactly why Phoenix invested so heavily to bring her to Arizona.

Her ability to create offense off the dribble instantly changed the spacing of the Mercury attack. Chicago could no longer load multiple defenders toward Copper, opening driving lanes, creating easier perimeter looks, and forcing the Sky defense into difficult decisions throughout the evening.

Beyond the statistics, Plum looked comfortable.

She pushed the tempo, confidently attacked defenders, distributed the basketball effectively, and immediately appeared to fit alongside Copper in what could become one of the WNBA's most dangerous backcourts over the final stretch of the season.

The offensive chemistry wasn't perfect yet, but it didn't have to be.

It was clear that Phoenix suddenly possesses another elite scorer capable of taking over games.

The Mercury offense reflected that throughout the night.

Phoenix eclipsed the century mark by attacking inside, moving the basketball effectively, creating transition opportunities, and consistently finding quality shots. Instead of relying on one player to manufacture offense every possession, the Mercury looked balanced, confident, and far more difficult to defend than they had earlier in the season.

Chicago deserves plenty of credit for refusing to fold.

The Sky continued to battle throughout the second half and repeatedly cut the deficit to a single possession. Their young roster played with energy and confidence, making Phoenix earn every basket during the final minutes.

But every challenge from Chicago was answered.

Copper continued to score.

Plum continued to create.

The Mercury continued to execute.

When the final buzzer sounded, Phoenix walked off the floor with a hard-earned 106-101 victory that could become one of the defining moments of its season.

For a franchise trying to fight its way back into playoff contention, Monday night's performance offered something even more valuable than a win.

It offered hope.

The Mercury now possess two proven stars capable of taking over games offensively. Copper remains one of the league's most explosive scorers, while Plum immediately demonstrated she can elevate everyone around her. If the chemistry between the two continues to develop, Phoenix suddenly becomes a team few opponents will want to face during the final weeks of the regular season.

One game doesn't guarantee a turnaround.

But it certainly looked like the Mercury may have discovered the formula they've been searching for all season.

If Monday night was any indication, Phoenix's offense just became significantly more dangerous.
