Alyssa Thomas Continues to Do Everything
Even in defeat, Alyssa Thomas continued to prove why she's one of the WNBA's premier all-around players.

Thomas once again filled nearly every category on the stat sheet, creating offense, attacking the basket, rebounding, and serving as the primary facilitator for much of the night. Whenever Phoenix showed signs of life, Thomas was usually at the center of it.

Her versatility remains one of the biggest strengths of the Mercury offense, but Tuesday night also illustrated the challenge Phoenix faces when opponents successfully limit secondary scoring options.

Kahleah Copper Battles Her Former Team
Facing the franchise where she became a WNBA champion, Kahleah Copper played aggressively throughout the evening.

Copper attacked the rim whenever opportunities presented themselves and provided several momentum-building baskets, but Chicago's defense consistently forced difficult looks while limiting easy transition opportunities that normally allow Copper to thrive.

The Sky clearly made slowing Copper one of their top defensive priorities, and although she had productive stretches, Phoenix never found enough offensive balance around her.

DeWanna Bonner Provides Veteran Leadership
Veteran forward DeWanna Bonner contributed important minutes while continuing to provide leadership for one of the league's more experienced rosters.

Bonner helped stabilize the offense during several possessions and remained active defensively, but Phoenix simply couldn't generate enough consistent scoring against a disciplined Chicago defense.

Chicago Wins With Balance
Unlike many victories built around one superstar performance, Chicago earned this win through outstanding team basketball.

Kamilla Cardoso controlled the paint offensively while protecting the rim on the defensive end. Her size forced Phoenix into difficult defensive rotations throughout the night.

Veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot orchestrated the offense with her trademark court vision, repeatedly finding open teammates and controlling the game's tempo.

The Sky also received meaningful contributions from Azurá Stevens, Rachel Banham, Aicha Coulibaly, and multiple role players, giving Chicago production from nearly every spot in its rotation.

That balanced attack prevented Phoenix from focusing its defensive attention on any one player.

Defense Wasn't Enough
While Phoenix had several solid defensive stretches, offensive inconsistency ultimately decided the game.
The Mercury struggled to find rhythm from three-point range, frequently settled for contested jump shots late in the shot clock, and were unable to consistently capitalize on second-chance opportunities.

Chicago also did an outstanding job preventing Phoenix from generating easy transition baskets, forcing the Mercury into a half-court offense that never fully clicked.

Slow Starts Continue to Be Costly

Throughout the 2026 season, Phoenix has shown it can compete with virtually anyone when playing from even terms. However, digging early holes has repeatedly forced the Mercury to expend enormous energy simply getting back into games.

Against a disciplined Chicago team, falling behind by nine points after the opening quarter proved too much to overcome.

Winning the fourth quarter showed the Mercury's resilience, but championship-caliber teams rarely rely on late comebacks every night.

What the Loss Means for Phoenix
As the WNBA schedule moves deeper into July, every game carries increased importance in the playoff race.

Phoenix still possesses one of the league's most talented veteran cores, led by Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and DeWanna Bonner. However, consistency has become the defining challenge of the season.

The Mercury continue to demonstrate flashes of elite basketball, but putting together a complete 40-minute performance has remained elusive.

If Phoenix hopes to make a serious postseason push, improving offensive efficiency, finding more consistent perimeter shooting, and eliminating slow starts will be critical over the coming weeks.
