Kahleah Copper Scores 41 Points, But Mercury Drop Heartbreaker to Sparks at Home

The Phoenix Mercury suffered one of their most frustrating losses of the 2026 WNBA season on Saturday night, falling 111-102 in overtime to the Los Angeles Sparks at the Mortgage Matchup Center. Despite a spectacular career-best performance from Kahleah Copper, the Mercury were unable to close out a game that remained within reach until the final seconds of regulation.

The loss extended Phoenix's struggles at home and highlighted the fine margins that have separated the Mercury from victory throughout much of the season. While Copper delivered one of the greatest individual performances of her Mercury career, Los Angeles countered with an equally impressive effort from Kelsey Plum, whose 43-point explosion helped propel the Sparks to victory.

Fast Start Gives Mercury Early Control
Phoenix came out aggressively from the opening tip.

The Mercury jumped to an early double-digit advantage by scoring the game's first ten points and forcing the Sparks to play from behind. The offensive flow looked sharp as Alyssa Thomas orchestrated the attack while Copper attacked the basket and knocked down shots from beyond the arc.

Los Angeles eventually settled into the game, but Phoenix maintained control through much of the first half. The Mercury entered halftime holding a 54-51 lead and appeared poised to secure an important home victory.

The energy inside the Mortgage Matchup Center reflected a team that was playing with confidence and urgency.

Sparks Take Momentum in the Third Quarter
The turning point of regulation came during the third quarter.

Los Angeles emerged from halftime with renewed energy and completely changed the pace of the game. The Sparks outscored Phoenix 28-16 during the period, using improved ball movement and efficient perimeter shooting to erase the Mercury lead.

Kelsey Plum began finding her rhythm, creating scoring opportunities both for herself and her teammates. Every time Phoenix appeared ready to regain control, Los Angeles answered with a timely basket.

By the end of the third quarter, the momentum had shifted dramatically in favor of the Sparks.

Kahleah Copper Refuses to Let Phoenix Fold
If there was one bright spot for the Mercury, it was the incredible performance delivered by Kahleah Copper.

Copper played with relentless intensity throughout the game, attacking the rim, knocking down three-pointers, and carrying the offensive burden whenever Phoenix needed a basket.

She finished with:

  • 41 points
  • 10 rebounds
  • 6 three-pointers

The performance marked a career high and served as a reminder of why Copper remains one of the WNBA's most dangerous offensive weapons.

Every time Los Angeles threatened to pull away, Copper responded.

Her ability to score from multiple levels kept Phoenix alive and helped force the game into a dramatic final stretch.

Fourth Quarter Becomes a Battle Between Superstars
The final ten minutes featured one of the most entertaining individual duels of the WNBA season.

Copper and Plum traded big baskets throughout the fourth quarter, refusing to allow their teams to lose.

Phoenix repeatedly battled back behind Copper's scoring while Plum answered with clutch perimeter shooting. The intensity increased with every possession as both teams understood the significance of the game.

Neither side could create enough separation to avoid overtime.

When the final buzzer sounded at the end of regulation, the score stood tied at 98-98.

Fans inside the arena knew they were witnessing a special contest.

Overtime Belongs to Los Angeles
Unfortunately for Phoenix, overtime quickly became a nightmare.

The Sparks opened the extra session with confidence and execution while the Mercury offense suddenly went cold.

Los Angeles outscored Phoenix 13-4 during overtime and never allowed the Mercury to regain momentum.

One of the biggest plays came when Cameron Brink converted a crucial four-point play that energized the Sparks and silenced the home crowd.

Meanwhile, Phoenix struggled to generate quality looks and watched its chances of victory slip away possession after possession.

By the time the final buzzer sounded, Los Angeles had completed the comeback and secured the 111-102 victory.

Alyssa Thomas and Natasha Mack Provide Strong Support
While Copper dominated the headlines, several Mercury teammates made important contributions.

Alyssa Thomas once again demonstrated why she remains one of the league's premier playmakers. Her 12 assists consistently created opportunities for Phoenix throughout the game and helped keep the offense balanced.

Natasha Mack delivered one of her strongest all-around performances of the season, finishing with:

  • 11 points
  • 12 rebounds
  • 4 steals
  • 3 blocks

Mack's defensive presence gave Phoenix valuable energy on both ends of the floor and helped keep the Mercury competitive in the paint.

Kelsey Plum Delivers Historic Performance
As impressive as Copper was, Kelsey Plum ultimately stole the spotlight.

Plum exploded for 43 points, setting a career high and matching the Los Angeles Sparks franchise record for points scored in a single game.

Even more impressive was the timing of her scoring.

Plum erupted after halftime, repeatedly delivering clutch baskets when Los Angeles needed them most. Her ability to stretch the floor forced Phoenix into difficult defensive situations and helped fuel the Sparks' second-half comeback.
Her performance will likely be remembered as one of the top individual efforts of the 2026 WNBA season.

What Went Wrong for the Mercury?
The final score revealed several key areas that contributed to the loss.

Phoenix actually shot an impressive 50 percent from the field but struggled in several critical categories. The Mercury committed 15 turnovers, allowing Los Angeles additional possessions and transition opportunities.

The Sparks also enjoyed an advantage from three-point range, knocking down shots at a higher percentage during key moments.

Most importantly, Phoenix simply could not generate offense during overtime. Scoring only four points in the extra period made it nearly impossible to survive against a Los Angeles team that was playing with confidence.

What the Loss Means for Phoenix
The defeat dropped the Mercury to 4-11 on the season and further complicated their path back into playoff contention.

For a team searching for consistency, losing a game in which Copper scores 41 points is particularly painful.

Performances like that typically result in victories.

Still, there are positives to build upon.

Copper's dominance, Thomas' playmaking, and Mack's defensive impact showed that Phoenix has the talent to compete with quality opponents. The challenge moving forward will be finishing games and executing during critical late-game situations.

If the Mercury can improve their overtime and fourth-quarter execution, performances like Saturday's could quickly turn from heartbreaking losses into signature victories.
