The Phoenix Mercury fought through four quarters of intense momentum swings Tuesday night but could not slow down Toronto’s explosive backcourt as the Mercury fell 98-90 to the Toronto Tempo on May 19, 2026, at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix.

In a game featuring 24 lead changes and 13 ties, the Mercury stayed within striking distance most of the night before Toronto pulled away with a dominant closing stretch in the fourth quarter. The loss dropped Phoenix to 2-3 on the season while Toronto continued building momentum in its inaugural WNBA campaign.

Toronto’s offensive duo of Brittney Sykes and Marina Mabrey proved too much for Phoenix to contain. Sykes delivered a game-high 31 points with relentless drives to the basket and timely perimeter shooting, while Mabrey poured in 30 points and repeatedly punished the Mercury defense from beyond the arc.

Phoenix had opportunities throughout the game and showed flashes of the balanced offense that has made them dangerous early in the season. However, defensive breakdowns and missed opportunities late ultimately allowed Toronto to take control during crunch time.

Mercury and Tempo Trade Punches Early
The game opened at a frantic pace as both teams pushed the tempo offensively from the opening tip. Phoenix attacked inside early while Toronto countered with aggressive guard play and transition offense.

Neither team could gain separation during the opening quarter, which ended tied 23-23 after multiple lead changes. The Mercury found success getting downhill offensively and creating high-percentage opportunities near the basket.

Toronto slightly shifted momentum in the second quarter behind hot perimeter shooting from Mabrey and Sykes.

Despite the offensive surge from the Tempo, Phoenix remained close thanks to its interior scoring and transition opportunities.

At halftime, Toronto carried a narrow 45-44 lead into the locker room.

Phoenix Responds in Strong Third Quarter
The Mercury came out aggressive in the third quarter and briefly regained momentum behind improved ball movement and attacking offense. Phoenix scored 30 points in the period and repeatedly forced Toronto into defensive rotations.
Alyssa Thomas once again served as the engine of the Mercury offense, contributing as both a scorer and facilitator while helping Phoenix generate quality looks in transition and in the paint.

Phoenix continued dominating inside throughout the game, finishing with 52 points in the paint compared to just 26 for Toronto. The Mercury also held an edge in fast-break points, showing their ability to create offense when pushing the pace.

Despite Phoenix’s strong quarter, Toronto continued answering every run. The Tempo closed the third period holding a slim 74-73 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.

Fourth Quarter Slips Away from Phoenix
The game remained tight deep into the fourth quarter before Toronto finally created separation late.

The Mercury offense cooled off during key stretches while Toronto’s guards continued making clutch plays. Sykes attacked aggressively off the dribble while Mabrey knocked down several critical perimeter shots that helped the Tempo build breathing room.

Toronto outscored Phoenix 25-16 in the fourth quarter to close out the victory.

Phoenix struggled to contain Toronto’s perimeter shooting throughout the night, and defensive lapses during late possessions proved costly. While the Mercury controlled the paint offensively, Toronto’s outside shooting and guard play ultimately became the deciding factor.
