Suns Fall to Nuggets 133-111: Booker Shines in Tough Loss

The Phoenix Suns ran into a powerhouse on Saturday night in Denver, where the defending Western Conference champions handed them a humbling 133–111 defeat at Ball Arena. Despite a strong showing from Devin Booker, who poured in 31 points and 7 assists, the Suns couldn’t overcome sloppy execution, foul trouble, and a relentless Nuggets squad that showcased championship-level depth and poise.

This marks the Suns’ second loss in three games to start the 2025–26 NBA season, while Denver improved to 1–1 with an emphatic home opener win.

First Half: Nuggets Hit Early, Suns Falter

From the opening tip, Denver dictated tempo. Jamal Murray led an early surge with mid-range precision and transition buckets, pacing the Nuggets to a 34–28 first-quarter lead. Every Suns defensive breakdown seemed to lead to an open corner three or an alley-oop finish.

By halftime, Denver had piled up 71 points, holding Phoenix to just 54. Nikola Jokic, despite taking only a handful of shots, already controlled the game with his passing — finishing with a 14-point, 15-assist, 14-rebound triple-double that reminded everyone why he’s a two-time MVP.

Phoenix’s bench struggled to keep up with Denver’s pace, as Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun punished switches with aggressive cuts and easy finishes around the rim.

Second Half: Brief Surge, Then Breakdown

In the third quarter, the Suns showed life. Booker hit back-to-back threes, Grayson Allen found rhythm from the corner, and Dillon Brooks added energy on defense, forcing a couple of turnovers that sparked an 11–2 run to cut the deficit to single digits.

But just when Phoenix looked poised to rally, Denver countered with its own run — an 11–0 burst capped by a Gordon dunk that reignited the home crowd. Every Suns turnover seemed to turn into an instant fast-break opportunity, and the lead ballooned back to 17 heading into the fourth.

From there, it was all Nuggets. Phoenix briefly trimmed the margin to 110–99, but Murray and Michael Porter Jr. buried clutch jumpers to slam the door for good.

The Suns hit 17 three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to offset 19 turnovers and 29 fouls, which gifted Denver 28 free-throw attempts. The Nuggets shot 51.2% from the field, while Phoenix managed just 44% overall.

Defensive Miscommunication: Too many wide-open looks for Denver shooters and slow rotations on drives.
Turnovers and Foul Trouble: Phoenix couldn’t sustain rhythm with giveaways and whistles halting any momentum.

For head coach Mike Budenholzer, this game was a reminder that high-octane offense means little without defensive consistency. Phoenix has shown flashes of brilliance through its first three games but must tighten up on both ends if it hopes to contend with elite teams like Denver.
