The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season opened Sunday, February 15th, at Daytona International Speedway with everything the Great American Race promises: discipline in the draft, massive momentum swings, and a finish decided in the final seconds.

And in the end, Tyler Reddick led just one lap — Lap 200 — and it delivered the biggest win of his career.
Reddick’s perfectly timed move in the tri-oval secured his first Daytona 500 victory and etched 23XI Racing into Daytona history. It wasn’t domination. It wasn’t control.

It was precision.

Stage 1: Early Order in the Pack (Laps 1–65)
The opening stage was surprisingly organized. Drivers worked manufacturer alliances and kept aggression to a minimum while testing the draft.

The first caution came early on Lap 6 when B.J. McLeod spun, creating minor damage throughout the field. After that, the pack settled into two disciplined lanes.

Stage 2 featured increasing aggression as drivers fought harder for track position before green-flag pit cycles.
A Lap 86 incident triggered a caution involving Chase Briscoe, Connor Zilisch, Austin Dillon, Cody Ware, and Ty Gibbs.
But the defining moment came on Lap 124.

Running at full speed, Justin Allgaier moved to the lead and squeezed Denny Hamlin toward the outside wall. The contact ignited a chain-reaction crash that collected a long list of contenders including:

With the field thinned and strategies reshuffled, the final 70 laps became a war of patience and timing.

The race featured 66 lead changes among 26 drivers, a testament to how evenly matched and unpredictable the draft was.

Only five total cautions slowed the event — but two of them defined the race:
*The massive Lap 124 wreck
*A final-lap crash behind the leaders

As the laps wound down, Carson Hocevar led at the white flag. Chase Elliott made a charge entering the tri-oval. The outside lane surged.

And then it happened.

Coming through Turns 3 and 4, Elliott had control.

Reddick saw momentum forming in his lane and made his move high in the tri-oval. With a decisive push from behind and clean air in front of him, he surged ahead.

Behind them, a crash erupted in the pack — but NASCAR let the leaders race it out.

What This Win Means Under The Chase Format
Tyler Reddick’s Daytona 500 victory is massive — but under NASCAR’s return to The Chase format, it does not automatically lock him into the playoffs.

Instead:

That changes the entire strategic landscape.

In previous formats, a Daytona 500 win would have essentially guaranteed postseason security. Now, while Reddick earns a major early-season points boost, he still must remain consistent throughout the regular season to stay inside the top 16.

The new Chase structure rewards:

✔ Consistent top-10 finishes
✔ Avoiding DNFs

Daytona provides momentum — not immunity.

For Reddick, the win positions him strongly near the top of the standings early in the year. But a few poor finishes in the spring could still put pressure on his playoff hopes.
