The NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway brought high-stakes drama as eight Championship contenders battled it out, but only Tyler Reddick's Hail Mary strategy paid off, securing his place in the Championship Four. With only two races remaining before the final showdown, playoff drivers faced intense pressure to perform, making for a thrilling day on the track. Joey Logano entered the race with a guaranteed spot, while the rest scrambled to secure theirs. Reddick's bold move on the final lap not only earned him the checkered flag but also a coveted spot in Phoenix.

Of the eight playoff Championship contenders, only Tyler Reddick had never advanced to the Championship Four at Phoenix Raceway. Joey Logano had already locked in his spot at a shot to win his third championship so he had no pressure heading into the Sunday Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

However, there were a few notable names below the cut line heading into to the Straight Talk Wireless 400. Denny Hamlin, still searching for that illusive first title, was -27 points below the cut line. Tyler Reddick was sixth in the standings, -30 points behind. Defending Champion Ryan Blaney was -47 below the cut, and fan-favorite Chase Elliott was at the bottom of the Playoff 8 standings, 53 points in the red.

But that didn’t mean that everyone (not counting Logano) could relax that was above the cut line. Homestead-Miami was just second of three races in this round. Back-to-back poor showings at this track and Martinsville next week can easily have anyone of these drivers eliminated heading into Phoenix.

Christopher Bell was sitting in second in the standings with a 42 point buffer. Kyle Larson was 35 points to the good. And William Byron had a 27 point cushion above the cut line.

As if Sunday’s race couldn’t use any further drama, the qualifying round put five of the Playoff 8 starting inside the top seven spots. Tyler Reddick took the pole, Kyle Larson was on his outside, followed by Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin in Row 2, and Chase Elliott put his car in the P7 starting spot. Joey Logano, William Byron, and Ryan Blaney all started in the back half of the field.

The first caution of the race came early as the #7 car of Justin Haley spun out after coming across the nose of the #47 of Ricky Stenhouse on lap three. None of the field came in for fresh tires or fuel since we had just started and the restart flew on lap six.

The next caution (around lap 50) came after the #5 of Kyle Larson scraped the wall after blowing his right rear tire. He would make two stops under caution to make sure they took care of any damage and his car was handling the way he needed it to.

The race off pit road saw Chase Elliott in front of Bubba Wallace, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, William Byron, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Alex Bowman, and Carson Hocevar. The field restarted on lap 54.

The rest of the stage went off without any other issues. Tyler Reddick won the stage and valuable stage points, followed by Bubba Wallace, Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Carson Hocevar, Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin, William Byron, Alex Bowman, and Martin Truex Jr..

The race off of pit road was a different story. Even though Tyler Reddick came into the pits first, and he had the first pit stall, he would lose time and drop six spots. Ryan Blaney led the race off of pit road, followed by Bubba Wallace, Carson Hocevar, Chase Elliott, Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin, Reddick, Alex Bowman, William Byron, and Chase Briscoe.

Stage 2 went off without any major issues amongst the drivers. Ryan Blaney would touch the outside wall on lap 113, and he would be the first to hit the pits and start the green flag pit stops. Of the Playoff 8 drivers, Tyler Reddick would be the last to pit with 41 laps to go in the stage.

The end of Stage two saw Denny Hamlin in first, followed by Chase Elliott, Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, and Ryan Blaney in fifth. William Byron finished the stage in sixth, followed by Martin Truex Jr., Carson Hocevar, Ryan Preece, and AJ Allmendinger.

While AJ Allmendinger was not in contention for the Cup Series title, he did lock in his spot for the Xfinity Series Championship Four with his victory last week in Las Vegas.

The race off of pit road saw Chase Elliott in the lead, followed by the #20 of Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Tyler Reddick, and William Byron.

The Caution flew on lap 187 as the #7 of Justin Haley would spin out into turn three after being contacted from the rear by the #54 of Ty Gibbs.

With 18 laps to go in the race, Tyler Reddick had the lead but he was the only car in the field who had not yet pit and he could not make it all the way on fuel. It was a major risk by the #45 crew chief, but the only way Reddick had a shot at the Championship Four was to win. So they threw a Hail Mary and hoped for a caution flag.

But with Reddick running low on fuel and tires, he was forced to pit with 14 laps left.

And then his prayers were answered. After only being back on the track for a lap, the Caution Flag flew once again with 12 laps remaining.. This time it was for the leaders as the #5 of Kyle Larson would spin in between turns three and four after contact with Blaney (leader) and he was unable to control the car before the yellow flag flew.

Tyler Reddick (on only 1 lap-old tires) stayed out as the rest of the field went to the pits. Ryan Blaney led the race off pit road, followed by Hamlin, Elliott, Bowman, Byron, Bell, AJ, Carson Hocevar, Kyler Larson, and Chase Briscoe.

And then the drama unfolded! With just one lap left, Ryan Blaney led the field into the final lap with the lead. He was followed by Denny Hamlin, and Tyler Reddick.

Reddick would dive down inside of Hamlin heading into turn one. He would slide up in front of Hamlin and set his sights on the #12 of defending champion Ryan Blaney. With Hamlin unable to catch up to the top two, he had a front row seat to watch his driver from 23XI Racing pull off an unbelievable pass. Reddick went high into turn three and hugged the wall. Blaney kept his line in the middle of the track. Reddick rode his momentum out of the high line in a beautiful pass with zero contact. He would take the lead, the checkered flag, and lock the #45 and 23XI Racing into the Championship Four in Phoenix!

Blaney would finish second, Hamlin in third, followed by Christopher Bell, and Chase Elliott rounded out the top five. William Byron finished in sixth, followed by Alex Bowman, AJ Allmendinger, Carson Hocevar, and Ryan Preece rounded out the top 10.

The win made Reddick the second driver to lock in his spot in the Championship Four along with Joey Logano. Now, there are just two spots left for six drivers to compete for in Martinsville Speedway.

As far as the rest of the playoff standings go, Christopher Bell still sings +29 points above the cutoff line, followed by William Byron with a slight edge of just +7 points. Kyle Larson is the first driver below the cut line (-7), followed by Denny Hamlin (-18), Ryan Blaney (-38), and Chase Elliott (-43).

But hey, regardless of how many points back you are, a win at Martinsville Speedway will erase all of that.
