DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR’s season-opening weekend at Daytona International Speedway delivered the action, drama, and chaos fans have come to expect. Across all three national series, race winners battled through intense pack racing, late-race wrecks, and shocking finishes to claim victory. When the dust finally settled, William Byron emerged victorious in the Daytona 500, securing his second consecutive win in “The Great American Race.” Meanwhile, Jesse Love took the Xfinity Series opener in dramatic fashion, and Corey Heim was awarded the Truck Series win after a post-race disqualification of Parker Kligerman.

Byron Outlasts the Mayhem to Go Back-to-Back in the Daytona 500

After a lengthy rain delay pushed Sunday’s Daytona 500 into the evening hours, the racing action was as intense as ever. Denny Hamlin, Austin Cindric, and Joey Logano controlled much of the race, but in true superspeedway fashion, everything came down to the final laps.

With the white flag in the air during overtime, Hamlin led the field before chaos unfolded behind him. Contact from Cole Custer turned Hamlin sideways, triggering a massive multi-car wreck on the backstretch. Byron, sensing the moment, powered through the smoke and carnage to take the lead and cross the finish line just 0.113 seconds ahead of Tyler Reddick. With the victory, Byron became the first driver since Hamlin (2019-2020) to win consecutive Daytona 500s.

“Yeah, obviously some good fortune, but I just trusted my instincts on that last lap,” Byron said in Victory Lane. “I felt like they were getting squirrelly on the bottom, so I committed to the top, and it worked out.”

While Byron celebrated, several contenders were left frustrated. Cindric, who led a race-high 59 laps, saw his hopes dashed in the final melee, while Hamlin, who had just taken the lead before the wreck, was left wondering what could have been.

The race featured 56 lead changes among 15 drivers, multiple big crashes, and a red flag delay of over three hours due to rain. In the end, Byron’s resilience and instinctual late-race move secured the 14th win of his Cup career.

Xfinity Series: Jesse Love Wins in Overtime After Massive Crash

The Xfinity Series season opener, the United Rentals 300, also ended in spectacular fashion. Jesse Love, driving for Richard Childress Racing, claimed his first win at Daytona after leading 30 laps and surviving multiple late-race restarts. The final caution came just after Love took the white flag, when a multi-car wreck behind him sealed the win under yellow.

Love, 20 years old, credited his team for the victory, acknowledging the strong performance of his teammate Austin Hill, who led the most laps before suffering a heartbreaking engine failure late in the race.

“It’s incredible to be in this position,” Love said after celebrating with his team. “I’m ready to go win a championship for Richard Childress.”

Rookie Gio Ruggiero finished second in his Xfinity debut, while Sam Mayer, Sheldon Creed, and Carson Kvapil rounded out the top five. Harrison Burton, returning to full-time Xfinity competition, came home sixth.

Truck Series: Corey Heim Declared Winner After Kligerman Disqualified

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series kicked off its season with a shocking twist. Parker Kligerman appeared to have won the Fresh From Florida 250 on Friday night, surviving a last-lap wreck to take the checkered flag. However, NASCAR officials disqualified his truck in post-race inspection for being too low in the rear, handing the victory to Corey Heim.

“Nothing short of crazy there in the last 20 laps,” Heim said. “I’m certainly glad to be on the right side of it, but it sucks for Parker.”

With Kligerman’s disqualification, rookie Gio Ruggiero moved up to second, marking a strong weekend for the young driver. Ty Majeski, Grant Enfinger, and Justin Haley completed the top five. Frankie Muniz, the former actor turned full-time racer, finished 10th in a career-best performance.
