Diamondbacks Blow Late Lead in Costly Loss to Nationals

The Arizona Diamondbacks had exactly what they wanted on Sunday afternoon. They held a two-run lead on the road, their offense was producing timely hits, and they were one win away from securing another important National League series. Instead, everything unraveled over the final four innings as the Washington Nationals stormed back for a 10-7 victory, handing Arizona a frustrating loss that could have significant implications in the National League Wild Card race.

Arizona leaves Washington having dropped two of three games after entering Sunday's matchup with an opportunity to build momentum before one of the most important weeks of the season. With the MLB Trade Deadline rapidly approaching on July 31, every game has become increasingly important, and Sunday's collapse highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses the Diamondbacks must address if they plan to remain in postseason contention.

The Nationals collected 15 hits, blasted four home runs, and erased a 4-2 deficit with an explosive fifth inning that completely shifted the momentum. Arizona mounted one final rally in the ninth inning but ultimately came up three runs short.

Arizona Controlled the Early Innings

The Diamondbacks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

Geraldo Perdomo opened the afternoon by reaching base before Gabriel Moreno ripped an RBI double into the gap, giving Arizona an early 1-0 advantage. Washington answered in the bottom half of the inning, but Arizona continued applying pressure throughout the early innings.

Perdomo gave the Diamondbacks another lead in the third inning when he launched a solo home run. One inning later, Ketel Marte continued his All-Star caliber season by crushing his 19th home run of the year, extending Arizona's lead to 3-2.

The Diamondbacks weren't finished offensively.

In the fifth inning, Moreno delivered once again with a sacrifice fly that pushed Arizona ahead 4-2. At that point, Arizona appeared to have complete control of the game behind rookie left-hander Kohl Drake, who had limited Washington's offense through the opening four innings.

Everything changed just minutes later.

One Inning Changed Everything

Washington's fifth inning completely flipped the game.

After allowing a pair of baserunners, Drake faced James Wood for the third time. The Nationals' emerging superstar delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon, crushing a two-run home run that tied the game at 4-4 and immediately shifted the energy inside Nationals Park.

Arizona turned to Jonathan Loáisiga in relief hoping to stop the damage.

Instead, CJ Abrams followed with another towering two-run homer that suddenly gave Washington a 6-4 lead. In just a matter of minutes, the Diamondbacks had watched a comfortable lead disappear.

Momentum in baseball can change quickly, and Sunday's fifth inning was a perfect example.

The Nationals suddenly looked energized while Arizona appeared stunned after surrendering four runs in one frame.

Nationals Continue the Offensive Explosion

Washington never allowed Arizona to recover.

The Nationals added three more runs in the seventh inning behind RBI doubles from Brady House and Jacob Young before Luis García Jr. capped the rally with an RBI single.

Another insurance run crossed in the eighth inning, extending Washington's advantage to 10-5 and putting Arizona in desperate comeback mode.

The Nationals finished with 15 hits and consistently put pressure on Arizona's pitching staff throughout the afternoon. Nearly every member of Washington's lineup contributed, forcing the Diamondbacks bullpen into difficult situations inning after inning.

Diamondbacks Show Late Fight

To Arizona's credit, the Diamondbacks refused to quit.

Facing a five-run deficit entering the ninth inning, Arizona loaded the bases and finally mounted one last rally.
Ryan Waldschmidt delivered an RBI single to cut the lead before Nolan Arenado added another run with an RBI groundout. The Diamondbacks trimmed the deficit to 10-7 and briefly brought the tying run to the plate.

Washington manager Dave Martinez turned to Clayton Beeter, who recorded the final out and ended Arizona's comeback hopes.

Despite scoring seven runs, the Diamondbacks simply could not overcome the damage done during Washington's middle innings.

Moreno Leads Arizona's Offense

Gabriel Moreno enjoyed one of his strongest offensive performances of the season.

The Diamondbacks catcher finished with a double, two RBIs, and a sacrifice fly while consistently delivering in clutch situations.

Geraldo Perdomo reached base four times, homered, walked three times, and scored twice while continuing to provide excellent production near the top of Arizona's lineup.

Ketel Marte added another home run to his outstanding season and remained one of the club's most dangerous offensive weapons.

Ryan Waldschmidt contributed an RBI during the ninth-inning rally, while Nolan Arenado drove home another run as Arizona attempted to complete an unlikely comeback.

The offense produced seven runs, which is usually enough to win a baseball game. Unfortunately for Arizona, the pitching staff couldn't protect the lead.

James Wood and CJ Abrams Take Over

Washington's two young stars proved to be the difference.

James Wood blasted two home runs and drove in three runs while reaching the 30-home run milestone for the season.

His game-tying blast in the fifth completely altered the direction of the afternoon.

CJ Abrams matched Wood's production by hitting two home runs of his own while collecting three hits and driving in three runs.

Together, Wood and Abrams accounted for four of Washington's home runs and six RBIs, carrying the Nationals offense during its biggest comeback of the season.

Dylan Crews also chipped in three hits as Washington's lineup finished the afternoon with an impressive 15-hit attack.

Pitching Struggles Cost Arizona

Kohl Drake showed flashes during his second Major League start but ultimately couldn't escape the fifth inning after allowing the game-tying home run to James Wood.

Jonathan Loáisiga was charged with the loss after surrendering Abrams' go-ahead two-run homer immediately after entering the game.

Arizona's bullpen never recovered from that sequence, allowing four additional runs over the next three innings as Washington steadily expanded its lead.

Meanwhile, Washington's bullpen did enough to protect its advantage despite Arizona's late push.

Bigger Picture

The loss stings for several reasons.

Arizona had an opportunity to win the series after taking Friday's opener and carrying a 4-2 lead into the fifth inning on Sunday. Instead, the Nationals claimed the final two games and significantly tightened the National League Wild Card race.

With the MLB Trade Deadline just days away, Sunday's performance also reinforces why Arizona's front office could still be looking to add pitching depth before July 31.

The Diamondbacks continue to possess one of the more dangerous offenses in the National League, but protecting leads has become increasingly important as the playoff race intensifies.
